A year ago, when my weekly column was on a different site, I wrote a column encouraging you to join Shirley and me square dancing http://www.casinogaming.com/columnists/dancer/2010/0914.html Everything I said in that column still applies except that this year the beginner’s classes are on Tuesdays, beginning September 13.
Shirley and I will again both be “angels,” which mean we’re experienced dancers who come back to help the new generation of dancers learn the ropes. Probably 90% of adults who can walk can become competent square dancers, even those who swear they have two left feet. Square dancing is a LOT easier than many other forms of dancing.
The article a year ago spoke of adding some variety to your life, along with some exercise. It’s easy for video poker players to get into a rut and drop out of the rest of life.
Largely due to my urging, two separate video poker playing buddies took the classes last year. This year, those two will be back and there are several others this year who have told me they would participate. This will make Swinging Stars undoubtedly the square dance club with the most advantage gamblers anywhere in the world! Not that there’s a lot of competition for this distinction.
Should you decide to join us, getting to know other successful gamblers is an extra bonus. A lot of us share some of what we know with our friends. I don’t recommend you show up the first night with 23 questions and start asking away. I’ll help you for a while and then suggest you contact me for some private consulting.
But a couple of questions a couple times a month? Sure. No problem. This already happens. About half of the club has attended one or more of my classes at the South Point or elsewhere and I probably get three or four video poker questions every time I show up.
The lessons are held at the Roger Bryan Elementary School, which is at the corner of Cimmaron and Katie, two blocks north of Flamingo, on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. beginning September 13. (For questions, contact Ron at 702-364-8344 or email me and I’ll send you a flyer.)
If you live on the east side of Las Vegas and want classes on Wednesday evenings beginning September 14, there is the Good Times club that meets near Sahara and Boulder Hwy. Shirley and I also belong to that club and attend many of their events, but this year at least we’ll be angels on Tuesday nights at the Swinging Stars club rather than on Wednesday nights at Good Times. For information about Good Times, contact Judd or Joyce at 702-360-1996
What you can count on square dancing is that the people there tend to be friendly and welcoming. The motto of square dancers is “friendship set to music.” If you’re friendly in return and shower regularly, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.
