Splurging in Vegas

I don’t know about you, but I built up a lot of unrequited Vegas energy during the pandemic. I also saved a lot of money by not paying for plane fares, hotel rooms, restaurant meals, shows tickets, drink tabs, Raiders seats, and gambling during the 2-1/2 years that COVID kept me away from the Promised Land. For a guy who visited Las Vegas three or four times a year for a week at a time, I was in severe withdrawal.

My first trip back to Vegas was in June 2022 and I went all out. Vegas is a great place for a nice splurge for any reason under the sun, so here are some things you might want to consider treating yourself to.

Bobby Vegas’ Vegas

[Editor’s Note: This post is written by Bobby Vegas, who’s proud to call himself a “scuffler,” someone who uses every advantage in casino gambling: trip planning with airline points, promotions, MRB and other coupons to improve his edge, discover new venues, lower food costs, get discount or free rooms, etc. Over 60 trips to Vegas in the past 25 years, Bobby’s first choice video poker, followed by a form of advantage play at roulette using Non-Linear Recurrence Theory and other AP techniques applied to sports betting and craps. “Diverse games and strategies allow for the most fun, at the least risk, for as long as time will allow,” he says. He’ll be writing about specific experiences, how he employs all the tools of the trade to his advantage and profit. Bobby, you have the floor.]

Landing Tickets to Raiders’ Home Games: The Resale Market

[Editor’s Note: As a follow-up to Dapper Dave Kamsler’s previous post about the Raiders game-day experience (or maybe as more of a prequel to that post), we asked Dave to provide some advice on how to score Raiders tickets in the first place.]

The easiest — and also hardest — way to get tickets is to be a big enough high roller that your casino host simply hands them to you when you ask.

A Trip to Las Vegas for Raiders Game Day

[Editor’s Note: This post is written by Dapper Dave Kamsler, a Las Vegas and football aficionado extraordinaire.]

One of my favorite times of year to come to Vegas has always been during football season. Coming from the East Coast, it’s so much fun to roll out of bed on Sunday mornings and have games start at 10 a.m., then for Monday Night Football to start at the much more reasonable hour of 5:30 — perfect for having dinner at a sports bar while watching the game.

Since You Asked — Two Worthwhile, but Little-Known, Attractions

In this installment, I write about a couple of miscellaneous non-Strip activities that are fun, but maybe not big enough to warrant their own blog.

The Nevada State Railway Museum in Boulder City is a branch of the Nevada State Museum. It’s about a half-hour drive from the Strip, about 15 minutes short of Hoover Dam if you want to make a fuller day of it. It’s currently open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but as always during these uncertain times, call ahead (702-486-5933) before you head out.

Since You Asked—The Price Is Right

I’m a huge fan of “The Price Is Right.” In fact, I’ve traveled to California several times to try to get on the show. I got to see both Bob Barker and Drew Carey, but alas, I’ve never been picked to come on down.

If you don’t want to go to California, or if you’re in Vegas anyway, you can get a good taste of “TPIR” at Bally’s Jubilee Theater, with the stage version of the show (when it’s running; currently, it’s not).

Since You Asked — Hash House A Go Go

Continuing my theme of Las Vegas food institutions, this post pays homage to Hash House A Go Go.

I’m sure many of you are familiar with it, whether it’s the location on the Strip (the Linq), downtown (the Plaza), off-Strip (the Rio or West Sahara Avenue), local (Summerlin or Henderson), or or one of the several out-of-town locations. In the recent LVA poll on the best locals breakfasts, Hash House A Go Go placed second in the survey, with 13% of the vote; only the venerable Peppermill surpassed it.

Since You Asked — Thanksgiving between Two Pieces of Bread

Are you a friend of the TV show “Friends”? Have you always wanted to try Ross’ Thanksgiving leftover sandwich? Well, you can (sort of).

If you don’t venture off the Strip much, you may not be familiar with legendary Vegas sub shop Capriotti’s. There are about a dozen locations across the Vegas Valley; the most convenient ones are on Sahara west of the Strip (in the same strip mall as Golden Steer steakhouse) and on Paradise, across the street from the Virgin (formerly the Hard Rock).
