Corona Virus Thread #2. [Please, confine political spats to the thread of 26 January]

Thanks for the info--though I do wonder how the coffee producers ever thought that China could be deflected from its traditional hot beverage (tea). The statement that white-collar workers are the largest group of coffee customers does suggest a possibility--that it's viewed as a prestige/luxury item.

AND, . . . coffee is healthy ! ! !

Benefits of Coffee courtesy of Harvard University

I know quite a few people who wouldn't, and probably couldn't, stop drinking coffee even if it was shown to be fatal. I'm probably pretty low on the coffee consumption scale: 4 to 6 cups a week.

You mentioned Starbucks--they're geniuses in getting everyone to pay $4 for a cup of coffee. I wonder what the corresponding price structure is in China, since per capita income there is about 1/4 of what it is here. Another thing I wonder is, you know that tempting array of goodies you have to walk past in order to get your coffee? What do they do in Chinese Starbucks? I believe the Chinese aren't big on pastries--but I could be wrong.

I read the linked article, and to be fair, they're more saying it's "no longer considered to be unhealthy," but if it wakes you up and keeps you from driving into a tree, well, I guess that's healthy.

WHO DeclaresCoronavirus a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization said the fast-spreading coronavirus that’s infected more than 8,200 people across the world is a global health emergency — a rare designation that helps the international agency mobilize financial and political support to contain the outbreak.

The announcement comes just hours after the U.S. confirmed its first human-to-human transmission of the virus, which has killed at least 171 people in China and has now spread to at least 18 other countries.

Since emerging less than a month ago in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus has infected more people than the 2003 SARS epidemic, which sickened roughly 8,100 people across the globe over nine months. As of Thursday, there are at least eight cases in four countries, outside of China, of human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus.

Count of Coronavirus Infections - 31 January 2020

Ummmmmmmm, . . . cheeseburger, . . . . .

Well, the headline about the cremations says "SAY SHOCKING REPORTS"...and it turns out to be a series of tweets from a single Deutsche Welle reporter. Also, the story cites a Republican senator's musings and speculations--not bolstered by fact. He floated the "escape from a secret bioweapons lab" conspiracy theory.

If China is lying about something, well, gee, that would be a first. Governments never lie, especially about situations that could spread panic! But I would imagine that any inaccuracies in their reportage are more due to the situation being fluid and somewhat chaotic.

I guess it's fun to make people freak out, and that sells newspapers, but I tend to believe the CDC, which says that the risk to US residents is actually very low and that the coronavirus is relatively hard to transmit. And yeah, yeah, I know that's just what the Deep State would say if...oh, never mind.

There have been pandemics before, and there will be pandemics again. This one is small beer on any kind of historic scale.
