In 2019, approximately 56,000 people in the US died from influenza. That's over 150 a day.

Flu shots are widely available, usually cost less than $20, and are covered by most medical insurance plans.

I think this makes it a mathematical certainty that someone will die of the flu because they were sitting home watching the news about the coronavirus outbreak and forgot to go get their flu shot.

Just sayin'.

GOOD NEWS ! ! !

KUALA LUMPUR: The deadly coronavirus will not cause victims to act like zombies, Malaysia's government said on social media, as officials act to correct the spread of misinformation surrounding the outbreak.

As medical authorities seek to contain the virus, some social media users in Malaysia made a connection between the disease and the walking dead.

Malaysia's health ministry dismissed the rumour in a tweet, however, saying: "The claim that individuals infected with this virus will behave like zombies is not true ... Patients can recover."

The Chinese people who act like zombies are referred to as the Wok'n Dead. Usually, they own restaurants.

From snopes

As an outbreak of a severe strain of the new coronavirus spread in the city of Wuhan, China, the Chinese government vowed to build in 10 days a 1,000-bed hospital to treat victims of the illness.

Given the massive undertaking, Snopes readers asked whether this was true. The Chinese government apparently is endeavoring to do just that. Photographs show machinery starting to prepare construction at the site on Jan. 24, 2020.  Within days, structures that would comprise the new hospital were already built. As of Feb. 2, 2020, pictures showed hospital construction near completion.

On Feb. 3, 2020, The New York Times reported the new hospital, named Huoshenshan Hospital, was preparing to accept its first round of patients.

The Chinese government, in keeping with its solicitous approach to caring for its citizenry, is digging a 200-foot-deep trench just outside Wuhan where coronavirus victims will be deposited. Not necessarily dead victims; any victims. Helps stop contagion. Chinese-style quarantine.

Fortunately, China already has a robust "disappearance" regimen in place, whereby persons who criticize the government on social media are removed from existence, as in the Nazi Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog) decrees. Maybe there have already been a million deaths. It's not like we'd hear about it.

Here in the US, Tucky Buckford and Clem Cornpone are swearing off Chinese food for the duration. They have also stated that they won't buy any fireworks this year. You never know, you know.

Seriously, though, I'm wondering if the high death rate in China is more due to their primitive health care system than anything else. Diseases like viral contagion often kill victims who are already weak due to some other non-fatal condition. And also--let's not forget that everyone in China smokes (except--I think--infants). That might have a huge impact on coronavirus mortality rates.

How did they ever get the Chinese people to start drinking (expensive!) coffee in the first place?

Wow, I missed this racist comment in January.
