Average stay at Ellis Island was 3-5 hours. They were expected to have money & then sent to Manhattan Island, where friends & relatives expected to meet them. They were then on their own, no govt programs.
The people in the pictures were those detained for medical or suspected criminals. They were either quickly cured or deported. Only 700,000 people total were detained.
