More Magical Electric Cars

Pj - the volt still sucks & it has taken 12 years to get to this point.  What makes you think we can make this radical transformation in 12 more years, when we still don't have the technology, raw materials, charging infrastructure, & electrical capacity.  Toyota said it isn't happening.   Nobody knows how much additional electricity will be needed & there are no plans to build new plants.  California recently had to tell people not to charge their cars because they didn't have enough electricity.  California is the same state that has taken 15 years & $100b to build a train track of less than 200 miles & it may take another 10 years to complete.

There is a shortage of lithium & it takes 10 years to bring mines online (not counting legal challenges).

From CGTN

For the EU to meet its 2030 target it will need 18 times more lithium – and to meet the 2050 objective it will require 60 times more. As things stand there is a lack of lithium and the solution is for the market to become more profitable for the mining companies. There is no shortage of lithium in the world, but currently not enough is being mined because it is a time-consuming process and current prices are low.

Mining can lead to deforestation, air pollution, water contamination and noise. An example is Covas de Barroso in Portugal where the surrounding mountains have some of the biggest deposits of lithium in Western Europe. Some local people are against more mining as they fear it will lead to pollution and an end to their way of life

From pj

Regardless, you can support a government that is gearing up, partnering, and investing in this transition

So pj, when was the last time did countries mandating economic goals through legislation work?   Ask Russia/China how their 5 year plans worked.

California is the same state that has taken 15 years to build a train line of 200 miles at a cost of $100b+ & there are still 10 years to go

.

The best way is to let the free market economy dicate it, rather than relying on magic.

OK Tom.  You are free to live in your bullshit, imaginary "free-market alternate universe" where the UNited States government did not invest in infrastructure for the automobile world you currently live in.

And if you want to pretend that government investment in technology doesnt bear fruit?  Thats fine by me.  I wont waste time giving you a line item list of a million examples showing the the ignorance of that belief.

Lets just mark this conversation and hope it doesnt get deleted like the ones from 10 years ago and all the crazy crap you guys said then.    I havent been forced to move my goal posts from 2008.   You and boilerman are now playing in a different stadium.

Stupid Tommie-poo lives in the past, is ignorant, and believes in a LOT of lunatic and evil shit. He tells us that electric cars won't work.

Eighteen of the world's largest auto manufacturers are transitioning to electric cars in the next decade. Most will be making only electric cars in a decade.

Democrats, who represent the majority of this nation's citizenry, voted to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build EV infrastructure.

Whom should we listen to? Hmm...what a puzzle...

Stupid Tommie-poo points to how dictatorships failed to achieve their goals. He uses that as "proof" that government investment in infrastructure doesn't work.

I wonder if he's ever driven on an interstate highway?

Interesting article that shows like estimated mpg, the expected range of electric cars is not as far as advertised.  The cars only reach that distance under optimal conditions, which are rarely achieved.  The recomended rule of thumb is assume 80% of the advertised number.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/the-truth-about-electric-car-range-how-far-an-ev-will-really-go-on-a-full-charge/ar-AA11lAKE?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=e62229e1807e437c861d49bd1e5c44dc

And the MPG of gasoline-powered cars is also estimated based on ideal driving conditions and maximum fuel-efficient driving techniques--which is why people rarely hit the factory MPG numbers in practice.

Stupid Tommie-poo.
