Putting Chicago violence in perspective

With covid occupying a good part of my days of late, I looked into a subject that I've condemned for more than a few years.  I grew up on Chicago's west side many years ago.  Courtesy of the Chicago Sun Times, I looked at the murders, not shootings, but murders in my old neighborhood.

Draw a 2 mile circle around your home today, and guesstimate how many murders have taken place this year within that circle.  Many would guess between 1 and 4.  That two mile circle of where I grew up in Chicago?  63.  That's right, 63 murders within 2 miles of where I grew up in Chicago!  If you expand the 2 mile circle to 3 miles, you would get 112 murders!  112 murders within 3 miles of home!

Call me crazy, but it's about time that somebody does something.

A study a few years ago found that about 60% of guns recovered in Chicago crimes came from other states with lax gun laws. Call me crazy, but I think the impending implosion of the NRA may be very good for Chicago citizens.

And in more big city good news:

New York City murders in Rudy Giuliani's last year: 649

New York City murders in 2019: 319

If guns were the problem then the neighboring states would have homicide rates comparable to Chicago, but that isn't the case. The problem is the people, not the gun. 

In the big city bad news, in the year before Giuliani there were 1,950 murders in NYC. So murders decreased by 2/3rds under Giuliani. 

32 shootings this weekend in NYC. By July, shootings in NYC had already exceeded all of 2019. 

Gary, Indiana has double the murder rate of Chicago.

Let's be honest, at the risk of being called racist.  The black community is a mess.  If you're an educated and articulate black person, you're not black enough.  Blacks are killing blacks at a magnificent rate.  Gary is all black ghetto.  The near west side of Chicago is all black ghetto.  The south side of Chicago is all black.  Many blacks believe that if one is "disrespected", then retaliation must happen.

Being able to carry a legal weapon simply limits the interest of punks to attack honest people.

I, like you, can see why someone might interpret that as racist.

Maybe abhorrent, appalling, atrocious, horrendous or horrible might be better adjectives to use.

Evansville's rate is 1/3rd that of Chicago which show the problem is not the gun but the people.

The point of my thread was this.........violence in Chicago is nothing new.  And you can rattle on and on about what the causes might be, but there are almost 500 dead this year.  Wouldn't you think that someone might want to try to DO something to fix or slow down the problem?  65 murders within a two mile radius is ridiculous.  Let that number sink in.....This isn't Syria we are talking about, it's Chicago.
