Spirit Airlines has shut down all operations, canceling all flights and leaving travelers scrambling.

I saw a video once where a gate agent was trying to charge someone a fee for a skateboard because it wouldn't fit in the personal item thing. Since it was at the gate the fee was going to be pretty significant.

Dude broke the board in half right in front of the agent and tossed it into the bin and said fits now. Haha.

The price of replacing the board itself was cheaper than the fee. The high cost items on the skateboard were the wheels, bearings, and trucks.

It doesn't matter if you are the cheapest; if you have a lousy product people won't use it; thus out of business

Au contraire. I can think of dozens of examples where the cheapest product sells briskly even though it's the lowest quality available.

Seems staged, as he broke it in half pretty effortlessly just by stomping on it. Those skateboards are supposed to support the full weight of a person, INCLUDING someone jumping onto it after doing some kind of acrobatic maneuver. Though I think the commentary said he was a professonal skateboarder, so it may have been lighter/more fragile than most.

Ludicrous that Spirit was charging $89. When I saw that guy stuffing his bag into the bin, they were "only" going to charge him $50. God knows, they seem to have had a crusade to piss off as many customers as possible.

It actually isn't that hard to crack a skateboard. Especially one that's well used.

When one skateboards they tend to keep their feet on or near the trucks (The hardware that the wheels attach to).

When one does aeriel tricks and lands with the skateboard they try to keep the feet over the trucks so the trucks take the weight.

The center of the board is a weak point.

And yes he is a professional skater and likely gets several boards for free from his sponsor.

All that being said it very well could have been staged but I got the vibe it's real.

You can sell products cheaply if the company makes a profit

In Spirits case the product was cheap and lousy; a recipe for bankruptcy

Nope. Cheap and lousy anything can still make a profit if it's cheap enough and not too lousy.

Spirit blew it by not keeping it cheap enough, with all their add-ons and surcharges. There were plenty of people who were happy with "lousy"--a few hours in an uncomfortable tin can--as long as it was cheap.

You are 100% correct. Anyone saying differently is too obtuse to be commenting.
