And as you pretty well know, David, I really do my best to 1) understand a post from the perspective of the original post of the thread; 2) give honest feedback without insulting (kinda failed that last response, tho), and 3) try not to interject with only my biases, but look into it best I can before replying. I really don't take sides other than on opinions/facts. JMHO.

You would be a very, very unusual Southerner if you admitted the shame of your region's heritage, the dishonorable way your people treat and have treated people who aren't white, and the biases and discriminations that still linger, after all this time and all the efforts to stop them.
The comments you've made here from time to time indicate that you don't agree; that you think that Black people in the South are treated with complete respect and equality. It's sad that you think so.
I understand that when you grow up in a racially biased region, are told by Mommy and Daddy, around the dinner table, for years and years, how Black people "aren't like us" and while useful, really shouldn't be allowed to hold positions of responsibility or authority; how they feel and think and react "differently"--and how, therefore, they should be regarded and treated differently. No one any more comes right out and says they should be treated worse, but the message is clear, nonetheless.
So in a very real sense, you can't help yourself. I'm sure that's the "heritage" of Miller's race hatred as well: Daddy told him (between beatings) that "they" were inferior. Hard to get away from, even decades later. Look, I get it.
