Who will be nominated for 2024?

For that to happen, more than half of our legislators/voters have to want it. And they don't.

True. But it's still palatable to consider that a majority representation of those two groups could select the STFU option, though it is currently unrealistic.

Perhaps...99 percent of Democrats and...let's reach for the stars...3 percent of the RepubliQ?

I can hardly wait until they threaten to shut down the government unless huge cuts are made to Social Security and Medicare. We'll find out REAL fast just how steadfast to the cause all those wrinkled old RepubliQ become when their rice bowls are threatened.

You must enjoy playing high house edge games, because you just spinned the Big Wheel on that 99%D / 3%R split assumption thing. Almost none of these politicians (R or D) have the STFU option on their ideological keyboards...at least prior to the people raising hell about something (eg SSI /Medicare benefit checks).

Both sides have been using that government shutdown threat for multiple decades. It's  most often used as a legislative weapon they employ to browbeat their opponents and spread fear in the citizenry. I hope a shutdown doesn't happen strictly from the people's standpoint.. recipient benefits and govt workers furloughs have often been exempt from shutdown effects in the end, although certainly administrative inefficiencies occur when they experience these argument extensions(applications for benefits are put on hold, etc.)

If they shut it down, I hope any cuts made will eventually improve some procedural efficiencies and cut some waste as a goal (can you say 'never'?)..but not at the expense of the people ( grandma/ grandpa benefits  and govt. employee paychecks). Seldom if ever has the latter occurred (outside delayed furlough checks), historically speaking. These shutdowns are like a fireworks show lit and presented from Pennsylvania Avenue..it's just a continuation of the divide in heavy public view.

Aren't you worried about your welfare checks being cut off, David? Porn is expensive.

Changing the subject does not change the topic. I will have to take your word about how expensive porn is.

But even if the shutdown threat doesn't materialize, everyone gets rattled--including the stock AND bond markets--and the manufactured drama deflects any actual work that might have gotten done.

I don't agree that both sides have used this tactic in the recent past. If memory serves, the last several budget blackmail messes were all Republican-instigated. Which makes sense, because it's the little guy who gets fucked, and we know which party does and doesn't care.

Again, there's got to be some disgust threshold which, when crossed, will stop at least some of even the most ardent RepubliQ from voting for a given Republiclown. Choking off Clem Cornpone, Cowboy Bob, and MAGA Maggie's gummint checks just might do that.

That's why you steal it off the shelves at the local convenience store, David. I'm familiar with your arrest record.

You call everyone a liar. Therefore, what you say has no meaning.
