One of MSNBC's favorite analysts.

That guy says that black people can be bigoted and prejudiced but can't be racist. I think he's wrong about the third point, I think black people can definitely be racist.

But that's not the question. Name one person who says only white people can be racist.

Can you think of any? I can't.

When I feel that way about a subject, I usually don't say anything about it. I find it saves some embarrassment later.

Thanks for looking out, but I don't embarrass that easily - more of a CYA comment for the "how do you know how these people really feel" retorts.

Oddly enough, there are people who think only white people can be racist - or people of non-white ethnicity are justified in bigoted thinking against white people
I've never met or heard of such a person actually thinking that.

Could you share you list of people who think only white people can be racist?

Actually Chris Matthews of MSNBC indirectly said it.

Well, actually in the 1980s a fellow named Derrick Bell and others developed an academic discipline entitled Critical Race Theory (CRT) in which the fact that Blacks cannot be racist is fundamental.

Here's a brief summary of CRT excerpted from a book "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria" by Beverly Tatum:
"Of course, people of any racial group can hold hateful attitudes and behave in racially discriminatory and bigoted ways. We can all cite examples of horrible hate crimes which have been perpetrated by people of color as well as Whites. Hateful behavior is hateful behavior no matter who does it. But when I am asked, 'Can people of color be racist?' I reply, 'The answer depends on your definition of racism.' If one defines racism as racial prejudice, the answer is yes. People of color can and do have racial prejudices. However, if one defines racism as a system of advantage based on race, the answer is no. People of color are not racist because they do not systematically benefit from racism. And equally important, there is no systematic cultural and institutional support or sanction for the racial bigotry of people of color. In my view, reserving the term racist only for behaviors committed by Whites in the context of a White-dominated society is a way of acknowledging the ever-present power differential afforded Whites by the culture and institutions that make up the system of advantage and continue to reinforce notions of White superiority."

DonDiego does not subscribe to this theory, . . . as, apparently, neither does Chilcoot. This is a good thing.

Beverly who?

I think parsing the difference between "racial prejudice" and "racism" is kind of stupid, but otherwise I subscribe to this theory.

Let's take a look at some of the effects of white racism/racial prejudice:

  • On average, Blacks have to stand in line twice as long to vote. (2012)
  • Blacks are four times as likely to be prosecuted for marijuana possession even though usage compared with whites is the same. (2013)
  • Blacks with darker skin receive longer prison sentences. (2011)
  • Predominately Black public schools receive thousands of dollars less per child than predominately white ones. (2010)
  • Blacks are four times as likely to be subject to "stop and frisk" in NYC, even though they are statistically less likely to be carrying contraband. (2013)
  • Job applicants with Black sounding names are less likely to receive a job interview. (2009)

Now let's look at the effects of Black racism/racial prejudice:

  • Some rappers write nasty songs.

So Beverly Never-heard-of-her wants to parse racism/racial prejudice as "a way of acknowledging the ever-present power differential afforded Whites by the culture and institutions that make up the system of advantage and continue to reinforce notions of White superiority." Can't argue with her reasoning.

I agree with Dr. Tatum that part of what's going on here is that some liberals seem to have adopted a new definition of the word "racism". They seem to think that it implies a statement about the relative power between the oppressors and the oppressed. I think they're wrong, that the word just means irrational hatred and intolerance founded on race.

I think it's silly for Dyson, Matthews, and (apparently Bell) to say or imply that black people can be bigoted and prejudiced but not racist, they're just doing violence to the English language. No one gets their personal dictionary.
