2013 - Get's on the internet and shares misery with other cranky old men, feels relevant.

Sounds like a huge upgrade for cranky old guys.
That was pretty much completely awesome. But I don't think this particular cranky guy is that old.

Says way more about the beater than it does the beatee.

Chilly I totally agree. Looking back on my catholic education I truly believe most of the priest and nuns were / are totally sexually frustrated. I will even go so far as to say many of the lay coaches were sadist who were frustrated athletes who never quite made it and they were dumb as a box of rocks so the only place they had power was over a bunch of defenseless kids. What is mind numbing is how far hazing and bullying has gone since my childhood. I just read about a boy being hazed by the wrestling team. They sodomized him with a pencil. We are talking a 13 year old.

You are correct but, there's a big difference between "a beating" and getting spanked or paddled which I know was a big enough deterrent for everybody I knew.

Spanking or paddling a child is still hitting. That is pain and fear for that child. It also tells them it's ok to hit another child.
Making them do chores or taking something away is much more effective.
I got paddled numerous times at my public school in the 50's...finally learned my lesson (got to know the vice-principal really well). Worked for me!

Remember a time when Roy Rogers visited our school (he lived about 3 blocks away), all the boys got to bring their toy guns and holsters for him to autograph. Wore them all day.

My dad was pretty good with his belt too!

Probably "all the boys" turned out okay too

Remember the "Fanner 50" ????

Rick
The brothers got the hand or the belt on occasion for various infractions.

Sis and I got our hair yanked a bit (not out, just yanked) when we sassed somebody or something.

We all turned out to be gentle folk, never of a mind to hit others, didn't make that type of connection.

The parents were not obsessed with our developing self-esteem, rather that we learned to mind our manners, obey rules and apply ourselves to be self-sufficient after we left the nest (and we all looked forward to that day).
