Don't bother them with the truth. Let them live their fantasy of some perfect lost era of America that never existed. Life is easier when you are not awake.

And "under God" was added in 1954, in response to godless Communism.
In my circles, it isn't too common. The only time I've recited the Pledge in the last few years was when I was with a group where the average age was deceased. And in my experience, the Pledge seems to be very very popular with people who love America but hate a lot of Americans.
