cigarette smoke in casinos

nmterlv- I have another "option" for you and your GF. Go down to the nearest VA hospital and visit all of the used-to-be smokers on the cancer ward. Let these vets tell you about the value of your so called "respect", that as a smoker, you deserve. If you don't leave there with a new outlook about your smoking, then prepare to join them in a few years when you can reflect back on all of the lack of "respect" you received when you were utilizing your options.

So split the casino into smoking and non-smoking areas. Problem solved.

Two questions that raises are whether the non-smoking section is ventilated independently of the smoking section, and does the non-smoking section have as good a selection of games. Maybe the casino only has to meet these standards to its own satisfaction, but in the really private sector--where states have imposed smoking bans--restaurants have provided equal menus to both sections and adequately ventilated both sections....and still have been forced to go totally non-smoking. And this in states where patrons have thousands of choices of which restaurants to go to, while having only a handful of choices of casinos. A very unjust situation IMO.
I don't smoke and I hate smoking. I am, however a Las Vegas resident and play daily. I bought 3 different types of portable personal fans. when someone lights up who is sitting next to me, I aim the fan at their ciggy for as long as the cig lasts. I don't say a word, anymore. the smokers are very billigerent and nasty. The fan is my statement; they get very annoyed with the fan and leave....almost all of the time. Why are they annoyed? Because they can't complain about the smoke being blown back at them. Makes them furious.
Love your portable fan idea enormously Pkrplr. I am sure that you breathe in much less smoke poison than you normally would by using this clever technique at the tables. I am still amazed at the large number of smokers that have no clue what they are doing to their bodies and general health after all the evidence of the dangers of smoking has been published and made shockingly clear for many, many, years. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS? Don't they teach anything of value in the schools any more?...or are the teachers and administrators just out for a big paycheck and huge pension?

This is all very easy. For all the non-smokers, I totally understand you do not like second hand smoke. But since casinos allow smokers to smoke as much as they want there's two options: love it or leave it.....I'm a smoker and am a considerate one. If I sit down at a machine and somebody is next to me I will ask them if they mind me smoking. When they do mind, I won't light up. If they're being a smart ass and insulting me I'll just light up and if they don't like it, tough luck. Nobody is twisting your arm to enter a casinso that allows smoking. If you can't handle it.....go elsewhere. It might not be the thing the non-smokers want to hear BUT casinos ALLOW you to smoke so smokers have every right to smoke and non-smokers have every right to consider their health and stay away

When joining a game, and IF you chose to sit next to a smoker, instead of making a different table or seat choice, and than pull out the fan, IMHO, that is very rude of you. You have/had other options, and to my way of thinking, are looking to instigate a problem.

That has happened to me at a VP machine, and I've politely mentioned that you chose to sit next to me while I am smoking, when you could choose a different machine or bank. It is at that point that I can easily become an extremely rude and obnoxious smoking player. I may even slow down my play and chain smoke while watching and commenting on your play.

IMHO, a good way to start something you may not want to start, or finish. The smoker was there first, and the casino allows smoking. The casino may even have a "No Smoking" room and you should consider patronizing it.

IF you were there when I arrived, I am considerate, and will often stand and step back from my seat to smoke. But please don't demand I concede to your "demands" or start with the fan on/at me. I promise you will not like the results of the confrontation that is almost certain to happen.

Casinos "value" smokers more than non smokers. Overall, they are bigger losers. Stands to reason, huh?

I'd like to know more about the 3 different kinds of fans. This sounds like a great scene in a movie. Start out with a small fan and after Road Trip gets his dander up, break out the super-charged fan.

Is there a cigarette fan and more powerful cigar fan?
There are a plethora of battery operated fans. Even some that come with "mister" bottles.

The mister emits a fine spray, and the fan helps evaporate the mist, pretty decent way to cool off in hot, non humid places.

I have several types, living in south Florida, in my "hurricane preparedness pantry". A dozen or more, and probably another dozen or more flashlights. Several are small, handheld and run on two AA batteries. Others are larger, and run on 4 AA batteries. I also have one that is about 8 inches square, suitable for a small room. During Katrina and 17 days of continuous power outage, I used to set it near a cooler holding block ice to help cool down a room. Plenty of ice and bottled water was available through FEMA a couple hundred yards from home.

My fans are all "old", had them since well before Katrina & Rita, and some of mine date back to Andrew! The small ones are easily found in Dollar type stores, or as promotional giveaways at various "festivals". I picked some up last year from an insurance agents booth at a festival in our community. If/when a storm and outage hits, I'll end up giving most of them away. Again. And flashlights also. I have way more than I'll ever need.

However, if I were in a casino and someone "misted" me while smoking, my dander would skyrocket, possibly out of control. Yep.

I think that if a person is bothered by smoke, or if a smoker doesn't want to annoy a person with their smoking, they should go down to the casino at 2-5 am where either one won't be bothered by the other one. Unless you get a person that insists on sitting next to you....because it's their favorite machine....there should be no problems. The casino is really dead at those times and no one should be bothered by anyone! Simple solution!
The early morning gambling session to minimize toxic smoke inhalation trick..... I have done that a few times in the past and it indeed works fine to some small degree.......No need to do that anymore as more and more casinos, ( albeit, not in Vegas ) are going smokefree. New ones in Ohio are now open and totally smoke free. Seems to me that as more and more casinos become smoke free the proverbial line will be drawn in the sand.

Those that like smoking will obviously frequent their favorite tobacco friendly one....Persons that hate smoking will hit up the smoke free places. The smart??? casino owners in Vegas will remodel to cater to both groups.
