When I was a kid, both my uncles owned pharmacies. Back in those days, almost all pharmacies had soda fountains. One of my uncles sold Coke and the other one sold Pepsi. In those days, they squirted a shot of the syrup in a glass, followed by a high powered squirt of seltzer water, and then the rest of the glass was filled with a normal flow of seltzer. You have to remember, that Coca Cola was invented by a pharmacist, so it wasn't unusual to have soda fountains in pharmacies.
I have to laugh at how much soda that we drink today as opposed to then. One uncle had a "thing" given to him by Pepsi that played their theme song when you pressed down on the "plunger"! "Pepsi Cola hits the spot.....six full ounces that's a lot!" I remember that if we had soda in the house, my Mom bought a quart bottle that lasted a week. If we were allowed to have some once in a while, it was a 6-7 ounce glass. Today, It isn't unreasonable to go into a 7-11 and get a 32 oz. drink that you'll finish within 15 minutes or sooner. It isn't uncommon to see people walking out of the 7-11 with a 44 oz. drink. And we wonder why so many people are getting Type 2 diabetes!
