99 to 0 and Republicans block it?

Harry "no House bills will ever be debated in this building" Reid ALLOWS OR DENIES debate in the Senate. Last I recall Harry Reid is a Democrat...

Feb 2014? This issue with the VA has been going on for YEARS and you want to bring up something that happened in Feburary?

Perhaps this should be a new topic on a different thread.

Nonetheless, President Obama already has commented on the problems at the VA:
"It's not enough to lay a wreath on Memorial Day, or to make a speech on Veteran's Day. When a veteran is denied health care, we are all dishonored. When 400,000 veterans are stuck on a waiting list for claims, we need a new sense of urgency in this country . . .
As President, I won't stand for hundreds of thousands of veterans waiting for benefits. We'll hire additional claims workers. We'll bring together veterans groups and the VA to work out a claims process that is fair and fast. And instead of shutting veterans out, we'll make sure that our disabled vets receive the benefits they deserve, and we'll allow all veterans back into the VA health care system."
[boldface added - DD]

__Senator Barack Obama, October 2007

Apparently, the President just hasn't gotten around to it, . . . yet.

The VA has been underfunded and overburdened for decades...and thats a travesty when you see how much cash gets thrown at the industrial military complex. Now add an additional 300k claims from returning soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan and you have a legitimate crisis.

Presidents can not move money from one department to another...Congress designates the funding for each department. The president cant get around to fixing the VA until he is given the resources by which to do it. forkush's link explains where the parties stand. What do you say to people who would obstruct resources needed for this care? I think if Democrats were doing it FoX News would say they hate the troops!
Ugh, more stuff chefantwon can't figure out for himself . . . .

When debate opened on the VA bill in February, Senate Republicans tried to attach Iran sanctions to the bill. The Democrats attempted to overcome the procedural hurdles, but could only get 56 of the 60 votes they needed, since 41 of the 45 Senate Republicans refused to proceed.

And so Democratic efforts to create 27 new medical facilities to help the strained VA meet needs of veterans maimed by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan launched by a recent Republican vice president failed.
"The VA has been underfunded and overburdened for decades"

The VA budget has increased from about $60b in 2006 to about $160b. Perhaps the VA should not have spent $500m on furniture and draperies.

The problem isn't money it is widespread falsification of information, secret admissions lists, unnecessary deaths and gross mismanagement

Yeah, he lied. What else is new? It's infinitesimal compare to his habitual criminality. Former Obama supporter and constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley calls him "the President that Nixon always wanted to be". He believes the constitution is at tipping point due to the continual overreach of Presidential power. Thanks a lot Chicago for spawning and giving us this criminal clown. If it weren't for Steve Bartman I can't think of one good thing about Chicago.

Not in the United States Senate. It takes 60 votes to proceed to final passage.

This would help you.
Hoops, this reminds me of education spending. Every year we spend more on education. Every year the results are terrible. Every year Liberals claim that we're not spending enough money.

By the way, the 2014 VA budget is $164 billion. The 2006 budget of $60 billion when adjusted for inflation amounts to $70.6 billion. In 8 years, the budget has increased by 132% in inflation adjusted dollars, yet they don't have enough money? Yep, this is just like our education policy. More money, poor performance, more money, poor performance, more money, poor performance..........

It's not a money problem, but instead a government problem.
