Bummer, drag, far out, dig it, burn rubber, lay a patch, turkey, split.

These are just a few I used on a regular basis in the early 70's

Oh man, I use a few of these on a regular basis. What a drag, well not really ,many of my friends do as well so I guess it's cool

I remember all of these, but can't say I know what the last two are in reference to. To me turkey and split are bowling terms which I understand. Are they not still in use or did they mean something else?

Please inform me, don't laying a patch and burning rubber mean pretty much the same thing?

I remember circa 1976-7 my Dad had a Capri, I believe it was, and I could burn rubber without trying with that V8. But a friend could really burn rubber with his Mustang fastbak!

Also, I love burn rubber which I understand means to leave a black line of your tire rubber on the road by "burning out". But what it really reminds me of is the Gap Band's hit in 1982-3 depending on where you first heard it "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)".

"Slicker than a horsehair couch."

I've never seen a couch made of horsehair, but if there was such a think I guess it would be pretty slick. Maybe PETA put an end to that sort of furniture.

FUBAR--everyone knows that one, but I never hear it spoken anymore.
Right up there with FUBAR is SNAFU and PPPPPPP (Prior Proper Planing Prevents P*SS Poor Performance). I believe they are all military slang.

Laying rubber and burn a patch are one and the same. My best friends brother was a Ford mechanic during the Shelby hay day. We left a lot of rubber in the old hood.

Turkey was somebody who was not all that bright. Such as you don't want to hang out with that turkey. The old explanation was turkeys are so dumb they look up to see where the rain is coming from and they drown.

Split means let's get out of here. Let's make like a banana and split.

BTW I went bowling for the first time in 25 years over the Christmas holidays. I felt like such an invalid. It seems like what used to be second nature is almost impossible. We used to bowl in three leagues and now I can't even slide....go figure. Man I looked like such a turkey ">)
Now that I'm "old" yet have a young child I find myself reviving the old sayings my grandfather used.

"Stand out in the middle of the road and bawl for buttermilk"--Don't be a crybaby.

"What kind of Coke would you like?"-- All soda water is a "coke" despite it's brand.

"Monkey!!" -- Used to hear that at blackjack tables in Vegas. Not so much anymore.

"Get off your high horse."-- Don't think so much of yourself.
I am waiting for the day when the next generation won't have a clue what "sounding like a broken record" or witnessing a "Kodak moment" is.
