Years ago when I was with the news I investigated this. It was the first time I met Anthony and his position was to look for the best paying poker tables. If I recall I shot that first interview with Anthony at Terribles.
But some casino execs confirmed to some degree the idea about "seeding the floor" with winners including slots by high traffic areas, where there were lines and people watching, on the end of rows, etc.
When NYNY first opened it was notorious for seeding its floor with high payout machines in high visibility places.
but some will argue that high visibility machines get more play and that's all it is. Well, I can't argue with that either. Anyway that was about 15 years ago.
About five years ago the strategy became to put the better paying machines in the back of the casino to force players to walk through the entire casino to find them so they would see more of the games.
the only "truth" that still holds up today is that higher denomination machines typically have higher returns than lower denomination machines.
I haven't played slots seriously in about 13 years, but I still will put $20 in Megabucks.
