Manners

I've had reason to take the Dallas light rail system lately.

Several times I've given up my seat to the elderly or females. Today when I did this another lady commented how nice it was.

Tonight on a very crowded rush hour ride, I was the only male to give up my seat and there were plenty of ladies standing.

I remember several years back a public service commercial teaching kids to give up their seat on a bus.

Do we need to start running these commercials again?

I've also noticed when I hold the door for people, most don't say thank you. Is this too a lost art?
Manners, in general, are a lost art. Being in the mid-60s now, I've noticed while riding Vegas trams no one offered anyone a seat. There were plenty of people older than I.

On the other hand, commuters traveling to/from work are a different story. Everyone pays the same fare, is equally tired, etc. If I did notice someone in need, I would still give up my seat (but I wouldn't expect it).

If I get to a door first, I hold it open for both young and old, male and female. If someone holds the door for me, I always express thanks.

You are right--it is annoying.

You can blame much of this lack of manners on Virginia Slims.

Hell, after reading the ad next time I'm going to expect some woman to give up her seat for me.
We men are pretty much useless.

I love it when I'm not thanked for holding the door (and there are double doors). The second door I let go at them.

I'll give up my seat to an elderly person, a pregnant woman, someone carrying a bunch of stuff, someone with kids, someone who's infirm or injured...but not ONLY because that someone is a woman. Is that wrong in 2012?

No. I do the same thing. Unless she's really cute.
Lots of things have changed for women since 1920.
Now they can:
- vote
- play sports
- work in careers in Science and Math
- equal pay for equal work

which also means:
- they can open their own door
- hang up their own coat
- pick up the check once in awhile
- and stand on the subway
Dear Mr. wrosie:

You're a true gentleman.

Respectfully,

Mr. Blade
I still abide by the general rules of being polite, don't think twice about holding a door open, saying thank you and other other things that were instilled in me since I was a kid. Not to say crude good ol boy comes out when hanging with some of friends sometimes when we're at the cabin or something, public is completely different.

You better open the door for me.
You better take my coat and hang it up.
You better always pick up the check.

I will kick your butt if you don't.
