But this happened in 2007.
She says that at Heir's 2007 wedding, Deen wanted it to be "plantation style."
The LA Times reports:
Deen, the suit alleges, told Jackson she wanted a “true Southern plantation-style wedding” and, using the epithet, suggested African Americans that would “wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around... Now that would be a true southern wedding, wouldn't it? But we can't do that because the media would be on me about that.”
The point is that many blacks say much worse and nothing is done about it
People of all races say and do idiotic things all the time and nothing is "done about it." What are we supposed to do about it? In the case of Paula Deen, companies who pay her to represent them or contribute content to their networks have decided (or, are in the process of deciding) that, in light of certain unsavory statements and deeds, Ms. Deen's services are no longer required. That makes perfect sense to me. Those venues aside, no one is preventing her from speaking.
She has a loyal following that has never demanded much more than predictable, boorish behavior from her. Beyond that, critical consideration of her simplistic television persona hasn't really been necessary. Now, she's under the microscope of knee-jerk public scrutiny. This cannot be pleasant. In fact, it's probably unbearable. But, whether the punishment fits the crime is irrelevant, because the punishment is inevitable. To quote Charles Bukowski, "That's just the nature of the way things work."
