So I Send An Email To My Slot Host At....

It was in the papers the other day that Boyd laid off people at all their casinos, plus 3 big corporate execs.

As far as the trend towards part-time -- this has been going on in casinos for several years. When Stations did a major cutback during the height of the recession (2009, I think it was), I was safe, since I was on-call and didn't get any benefits, anyway.
This helps explain why their stock price hasn't gone up much.

I have never known an adult who worked less than 30 hours a week. Was a work week of over 30 hours once uncommon?

What Americans plant in Nov start to grow in Jan... Sadly the new American work week will look a lot more like 28-30 hours instead of 36-40..
Although I didn't know about the layoffs (I skipped the 10K tourney last weekend), I commented on how lousy the host staff was at keeping their Emeralds happy in the followup survey. Good timing on my comment. I never was a big fan of Johnny and never understood why they kept him around. Their group of hosts certainly were never proactive. I'll have to check on my hosts at Orleans and GC, who were much more attentive.

I believe jatki99 is referring to the fact that many casinos are firing full time employees and hiring people at part-time hours (less than 30 hrs/wk) so that they can save on not giving them a benefit package (including health care).
My employees' benefits cost me an additional $6.50/hr per person. They don't even see it as a cost to me, they're only blinded by what their hourly wage is. So my full time help at $12/hr is actually costing me $18.50/hr. Ask them what they make, they'll say $12/hr...not $12/hr plus sick time, vacation time, full health care and 401K matching. I don't blame the casinos. It sucks, true, but I don't blame the casinos.

If we were talking about a dealer or a slot tech or another hourly position, I could believe that was the case. But the thread is about a host and host is a salaried position.

The casinos should be ashamed of themselves, specifically Sams Town. When profit becomes the only motivator we all lose. Thanks to Tea Party economics the working world no longer takes into account the value of customer service and the importance of people. Like Ted Kennedy use to say, "How much money is enough for all of you? You have millions of $$$ but want more. There are people in this country that don't have enough food to eat or a safe warm place to sleep. You should be ashamed of yourselves."

This my friend, is called having a social consious.

I agree it does suck, but walk into a corp. bd. room and tell them this. I'm sure they'll thank you for your input and will kindly show you the door.

And you are being naive if you think the tea party is to blame, actually are there no social ill's youDON'T
blame them on?

Sorry, I really didn't mean to spin this a different direction, my post on 30 hr work week was just an obsevation. Sorrry bags, I'm done here.

Actually you can call it obamanomics. Since elected, average unemployment is over 8%, record number of people are on food stamps and living below the poverty line. The % of adult Americans working is at 30 year lows.

....Sam's Town! Johhny Defulvio is his name. I get an email back that he is no longer with the Boyd organization! WTF? So I call up my friend at the front desk and ask them what's going on. She tells me that Boyd cut everyone, and there's only ONE slot host left at ST! How can that be? Johnny handled all the slot and video poker tournament that ST had regularly.

Not to mention that Johnny had 25 years at ST! How could they do that to a person? I guess he was almost ready to retire anyway, but that's besides the point. I'm sure many of you out there know Johnny from your trips to ST, and particpating in the tournaments. Johnny would do a countdown for the tournaments by counting one-two-tree in his Brooklyn accent!

They still have tournaments running, but I guess he won't be supervising them. He'll be a great loss to ST and to all the people that love him!

Hey Bob,do you know the name of the only host that's left?

Yes, it's Henry who I believe was the supervisor of the slot hosts. I wonder what happened to the girl who assisted at the slot tournaments. Can't remember her name.

On a side note, the woman at the front desk told me that Johnny had come by on Friday, so it must have been a friendly breakup.

Seems to me that just when I thought Vegas was rebounding, things seem to be sliding backwards again. There were times at the Silverton that you cold shoot a cannon through the place and not hit anyone. Everyone I spoke to like the bellman, slot host, valet, front desk and the manager of the buffet was complaining how slow it has been lately. I wasn't at any other casino to make a comparison, but yesterday the front desk person told me that ST was very slow also. It seems that at least twice a week I'm getting a mailer from ST telling me I'm a Gold Card holder and I have 5 free nights coming and $150 in FSP each trip.

Many American businesses have been shifting away from full time staff to on-demand, part-time positions. The days of the movie studios and TV stations in Los Angeles, for example, having big full time camera, sound, make-up, technical, lighting crews is over. Everybody is per diem. Many of the TV stations in LA today have only a few full-time "staff" writers, reporters, cameramen, editors -- and everyone else is per diem.

I worked at a station that about 15 years ago "fired" nearly every news writer and news cameraman, and then immediately rehired all of them as "per diem" employees. But as "per diem" there is no guarantee as to the number of hours anyone works per week. This allows the businesses to have more flexibility for budgets.

Some of you probably don't remember the "old days" when there weren't 401(k) plans... and companies actually paid for your pension.
