Street "Performers" and Water "Sellers"

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
- Benjamin Franklin, Memoirs of the life & writings of Benjamin Franklin

Just substitute 'profits' for 'safety' and there you go.

No, I don't want to be involved in such decisions. The business owners should be, however. Enforcement would best be handled by the mob, but since they're not involved any longer we'd have to rely on the police. I heavy hand would work best.

And you get to decide which humans are 'desirable' and which are 'undesirable'? How they can dress? What they can say? Maybe you could tattoo the ones you think are 'undesirable' so they'll be easier to round up.

So you wouldn't complain if President Obama started dictating what you could wear and where you could speak and what you could say? Real Conservatives don't like Big Government interfering with people's choices....and they don't just toss away our rights and freedoms that our military has defended with American blood for so long.

What about the rights of business owners? These people drive business away, and do you folks believe that they should have an unbridled license to cause financial damage?

I doubt that many people have stopped going to Vegas or visiting casinos because they fear the Street Performers like you and DR milled. You have stopped going to Vegas because of them, right?

Maybe for every Boilerman who has been driven away from Vegas Casinos because he fears the harmless street performer there is an AlanLeroyII who enjoys their performances and tips them for it and is more likely to visit the Casinos near where they work.

But even if your silly straw man exaggeration was true, these people have the same right to dress up in costume or make music or dance or sing or paint in public as you do to talk to yourself and hop on one foot.

And if you want to talk about 'unbridled license to cause financial damage', Americans also have a right to picket a business or boycott a business. I'm sure Boiler and DR think their Big Nanny State Government should take that away from the people too.

We have these rights and freedoms because brave men and women have defended them for over 2 centuries. I cherish them. You want to toss them into the trash can of prudish personal sanitation. Goody two-shoes

Oh no. That's too easy. Tell us who you would ban and why. All of the Characters or just some? The Musicians? Street Magicians? Artists? Turn to Jesus Preachers? Salvation Army? Union Pickets? Which group do you wish to suppress today?

No blood test is required. A sensible person can figure it out, and I'm sure that business owners and cops can figure it out. Just get the Libs out of the way, and business downtown will grow.

I think you may be creepy deep down. Is there some kind of blood test we can do to help us eliminate this scourge and make sure all the 'creepy people were gone'?

I'm confident that none of us has ever felt "scared" downtown. In fact, downtown is my favorite place. I would prefer, however, that the creepy people were gone. I'm certain that the business owners would prefer the creepy people were gone. I'm certain that business would increase downtown if the creepy people were gone.

I think the 'creepy people' they're refering to are the panhandlers, beggars, bums, drunks, gangsters and punks...Not some 20 year old dressed up as Mr. Spock. But I can understand how SpongeBob might scare the crap out of you.

I think by not objecting to street performers and unlicensed water vendors I may have given people here the idea that I am a liberal. That could not be further from the truth. I have never had a street performer or water vendor block my path in order to make money off of me and I'm not scared to go into any businesses where they are known to frequent. My impression of these people is that what they are doing is a last ditch effort to survive. Would I like them to pay taxes on it? Sure. But, I would also like to see our tax dollars reserved for use by legal American citizens. Since that obviously is not happening, I say if you want to haul a huge cooler packed full of water and ice up onto a overpass to make a few bucks go right ahead. As far as government agencies wanting to license them to make sure the water is safe I say no thanks. I am smart enough to look at the bottle and tell if the seal has been cracked and if the vendor opens it before I inspect it I won't pay him. I have tried to buy water at an ABC store. The lines are always ridiculously long. I'm on vacation and I'm not going to waste my time standing in a line for water when there's no waiting right outside. I have never used the services of one of the characters posing for photos. I don't like to have my picture taken. However, if I ever find the guy that looks like Alan from The Hangover I will get my picture taken. I need a new profile pic for my Facebook.
What if some of the characters were found to be "offensive" to some people, say if a white guy were dressing up as the Washingtron Redskin mascot guy(I don't know his name but he's the guy who runs around dressed up in full indian costume).

That's part of the cost of freedom.

+1

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm also no liberal. I'm a small business owner for many years. I just see people showing some initiative and not just sitting on their butts collecting welfare. If some people can't handle SpongeBob Squarepants or cold water sales, that's not my problem.. I'm going to try to interview all of the Fremont Street Characters on my next visit in December....see if I can find out what makes them tick. Maybe I'll finally make my movie. Maybe I'll wear a new costume. Do you think that would be too creepy?

Exactly.

I will say I really don't care for the number of them and they can be a PITA, but they're there, part of the landscape.

Taking RnR's point, if it starts causing a problem(i.e.,the free flow of foot traffic), they should be directed to somewhere else.
I get creeped out by a lot of the Fremont characters, but that's my problem. It's probably because I've read Joseph Wambaugh's Hollywood Station books, in which he describes the typical dress-up Batman or Wonder Woman at the Hollywood Mann Theater as a speed freak and all-around dirt bag.

But there's a solution for people like me in just four letters: LINQ. You get 100% private property so there are no rights issues, and beautiful casinos, immaculate facilities, MUCH better looking tourists, and nary a Spock or Cupid anywhere in sight. Sure the room rates are higher, the pay tables are tighter, and a bottle of water at the magnificent Brooklyn Bowl will probably run you $5, but hey, you get what you pay for.

We have a choice! Ain't America great?

But just how do you get to LINQ without passing Batman, Chuckie, Creepy Cupid or Monopoly Man ???

............ maybe get dropped in LINQ by one of those Las Vegas tourist copters ???

The Street Performers are ubiquitous if you walk the Strip,
and it seems like I'm always trying to get past them, through them or around them.
