We need to outlaw balconies. No drugs or booze involved in this one.

Sorry,

But I have a good female friend who had a son who was addicted to marijuana. I unfortunately use the term "had". He tried suicide twice. The first time his brother got to him in time. The second time there was nobody to save him. He specifically gave the reason of his suicide as being tied to his addiction to marijuana.

I know just like most of us can drink alcohol responsibly or gamble responsibly, some cannot. It is very possible for someone to become addicted to marijuana.
I am sorry for your friends loss. Three of my good friends from the time I was 15 until age 24 died from drugs or alcohol. They all lived on the same street. Two of them died from alcohol, one because of a bad temper, high speed motorcycle and alcohol don't mix. The other just drank himself to death. The third was a fellow firefighter and had a very addictive personality. Once he found crack he ruined his life.

All three of these guys were fantastic, fun people when they were sober. All three of them were depressing as hell to be around when they went on a binge. Everyone of us wore ourselves out trying to help them. The fire service bent over backwards with the one but finally we had to force him to retire. I think the loss of the job was the final nail in his coffin.

Looking back I have lost so many people to death or prison I thank God everyday I got out of that arena. It is sad how many of my old friends were always going to make that one big score and get out. Not one of them ever made that big score. Most wound up dead, losers or in prison.

Once again I am sorry for your friends loss.

I'm really sorry for your friends loss as well RM, but sorry, mj is NOT a physically addicting drug. Just because he said he was addicted doesn't make it so, sounds like he was trying to place blame for his depression or something, but I don't know for sure, not a psychiatrist. I'm pretty certain the only truly addicting drugs are nictine which is second only to heroin, heroin, alcohol and coke/crack. MJ isn't even close to being physically addictive.

There is psychological addiction, too. I took an illicit drug class back in college called Chemistry of Drugs. It was taught by my fraternity's professor adviser. We had first hand experience.

True. And people have addictions to video games and Facebook too. But the root cause of the psychological addiction is inside the addict, so please don't blame video games or Facebook - or marijuana for that matter.

Roulette Man, I'm sorry for your friend's loss, and for yours, but correlation does not equal causation. People kill themselves because the pain of living is greater than the pain of dying. And when people feel pain, they tend to self-medicate. Marijuana wasn't the cause of his mental illness, it was a symptom.

It must be comforting for family members to point to an external cause, but that doesn't make it real. Our puritanical drug laws have ruined more lives and killed more people than legal marijuana ever could.

Damn Forkie, that was perfectly said. See? You actually are capable of civil discourse, wish you'd show it more often.

Forkie, not to be a pompom waver but you said that better than I ever could. Three things come to mind. Many things are habit forming, or we just like to do them. I have two friends I swear they are addicted to Coca Cola. It doesn't mean you have a physical addiction.

Correlation does not equal causation, I was trying to remember this saying for my earlier post about addiction and tricycles.

My brother died the Sunday before last Thanksgiving. He went in for "routine" heart surgery which let me tell you open heart surgery is anything but routine. He never woke up which was totally unexpected. We all blamed the surgeon and talked about a law suit. After our emotions calmed down and we spoke to friends in the medical profession we came to realize what happened and it was just meant to be, his turn to die. Sad but the surgeon had no way of knowing what he was up against until he opened up my brother, then it was too late.

Anyway Forkie I am not a cheerleader but when I see something I disagree with or agree with I want to call you on it.
