Teen dies in CO. after eating pot cookie

There are many myths about marijuana that just don't seem to die. Not everyone who smokes pot is a stoner, slacker who emulates a Cheech and Chong movie. Marijuana is not addictive and does not lead to harder drugs. Those are facts that with a little research can be substantiated. Many of these myths have been crammed down our throats since the days of Richard Nixon.

I will say before I became a public servant I smoked pot everyday, or close to it. During that time I was an honor student and scored in the top 2% of the country on my SAT's. After graduation I held down two and sometimes three jobs. After smoking every day for close to eight years I stopped without any withdrawals etc. and have not smoked for 33 years. Marijuana is not addictive and I laugh when people talk about treatment for MJ addiction. There is no treatment.

MJ does not lead to harder drugs. Ask any Hells Angel if he rode a tricycle as a kid. If he says yes, does that mean riding a tricycle leads to becoming a Hells Angel? We need to ask MJ smokers if they do other drugs. More than likely the bulk would say no. The same is true for anyone who rode a tricycle, most never became a Hells Angel. The deal is most people who are doing hard drugs probably started out with all types of drugs including aspirin, beer and most likely pot although there is a lot of evidence that points to todays Heroine epidemic starting with prescription Oxy. People got hooked on legal Oxy and then switch to Heroine when their scripts ran out and buying it illegally is too expensive.

People will say beer leads to hard liquor. The active ingredient of beer is the same as hard liquor. The high is basically the same, you just get there faster. The high derived from meth, coke, LSD etc. are entirely different than pot. Speaking from firsthand experience if you like pot you most likely can't stand coke.

I did a lot of things 33 years ago and I am glad to be out of that arena but I will say the whole marijuana myth has been a huge lie perpetrated by many different groups and I am glad to see it being put to rest.

Marijuana...good for you...kills cancer cells and puts you in a good mood.

Kills cancer cells? Dude, what oncologist told you that? Marijuana is said to ease nausea from cancer treatment (chemotx). No curative properties.

The problem is the propensity to escalate use, and when the thrill is gone move to more illegal and addictive substances.

From Cancer.gov

Antitumor activity

Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells.

A laboratory study of delta-9-THC in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) cells showed that it damaged or killed the cancer cells. The same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects. Delta-9-THC has been shown to cause these effects by acting on molecules that may also be found in non-small cell lung cancer cells and breast cancer cells.

A laboratory study of cannabidiol in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells.

A laboratory study of cannabidiol in human glioma cells showed that when given along with chemotherapy, cannabidiol may make chemotherapy more effective and increase cancer cell death without harming normal cells.
Not only does smoking grass alter the mind so that a person cannot drive or even act correctly, it's filled with toxins that'll give you the ultimate in buyer's remorse when you get hit with cancer or some other nasty, "unfair" disease. Idiots smoke it to get high, that's all. It's as blatantly dumb as smoking cigarettes. There is no point to it other than to harm your health.

And there are more than enough studies out there that offer definitive proof it can lead to using harder, more dangerous substances. The majority won't take that step, but why temp oneself with possible self-destruction.

While the debate between sensibility and potheads rages on, I'll be glad to sit back and watch the show, saying how I told you so as one young person after another goes to meet their maker as the result of getting involved in such a useless drug far earlier than they should have.

Pot does not lead to harder drugs. People with addictive personalities try harder drugs.

Marijuana became legal in Denver three months ago. A lot of legalization opponents said crime would soar. Early returns suggest otherwise.

Violent crime is down 2.4%.

Property crime is down 12.1%

Will be interesting to see if these trends hold.

Have a gin-n-tonic while you watch, Alb.....just keep in mind you're more likely to get cancer/addiction problems from that than you are from weed. All you need is a motorcycle and a tattoo and you can be like the rest of us junkies!

It sounds like Alb has never even tried smoking weed to begin with, the ignorance in his posts is blaring.I think maybe watched reefer madness too many times.

"Idiots smoke it to get high, that's all." No they, smoke it to sad.

Tut's story sounds simlilar to mine, but I will say I did do other drugs, a good bit of 'em, way back when and it did start with smoking weed. I treid about anything I could get my hands on, mushrooms, LSD, coke(now right there is THEE most quintessential addicting drug ever) and of course alcohol, all before I was 18. My grades suffered horribly. I can honestly say it wasn't any sort of addictive issue nor did weed "lead " me to try the other drugs, it was peer pressure plain and simple, I wanted to be in with the "cool crowd" which in my school was defined as freaks or jocks. My grades suffered because it was cool to blow off school but in reality it just wasn't cool to get good grades. I could ace any test given an hour or two notice IF I had to.

It was about midway through high school I figured I better pull my head outta my ass and apply myself because I was going to college, it was instilled in me all growing up and I just always knew I was going, no matter what. So the partying slowed down, way down I still smoked weed and drank some on the weekends mostly. By the time college graduation approached I hardly smoking any at all, I dunno why I guess I just figured I had had enough and it that was that.

On another note, I know people who smoke everyday and they are by no means the typical "stoner" types, not at all. One of my best friends is a master carpenter, he can roll up to a place and built an entire custom home with the most intricate wood work you've ever seen and he takes a few tokes every morning on the way to work, it's how he starts his day. He's also an alcoholic but quit 7...10 years ago, something like that, no AA or anything just decided he'd had enough.

Anyway, there's A LOT of people who get high out there, I bet most would be surprising. As tut said, they're not all your cheech and chong stereotypres.

Seattle news is reporting a UW student has fallen from a second floor window after drinking. I'll bet his story doesn't make national news. We should ban alcohol.
