Texas middle school principal fired for urging kids to speak English

No, it's a great thing...........just like Mexican kids who are attempting to learn English (or should be) by speaking only English is a good idea.

And what the hell is wrong with urging kids to speak English in an American school?

Is that such a bad thing to speak only German in a German class?

I don't know it this is true, but too many Mexicans do not understand English. Learning the language in school, I believe, is an interesting concept.

"The formal notice of termination Lacey received from the board listed eight reasons for not renewing her contract. Those included failure to fulfill her duties, incompetence or inefficiency, inability to maintain discipline, insubordination and failure to meet professional conduct standards."

To Muskeg's point, I don't point to things that agenda-driven media or personalities like Rush Limbaugh or Rachel Maddow or their print brethren as reliable, objective information.

Because it's a personnel issue and the employer can't talk, we'll probably never know the real story, just the views of the disgruntled ex-employee.

It could be that an overly politically correct school board considers urging kids to speak English is "failure to fulfill her duties, incompetence or inefficiency, inability to maintain discipline, insubordination and failure to meet professional conduct standards." Unless there are more specific details provided for each of those claims, they could all be different ways of saying the same thing.

I consider myself a liberal, but I don't see anything wrong with expecting children to speak English in school. It is preparing them for the real world, and allowing them to communicate in their native tongue all the time is going to hold them back. The accommodation that should be made is when there is an emergency situation...many people get flustered in such circumstances and having someone who can understand and translate what they're upset about is a plus. I also think if they want to converse with their friends in their own language during lunch or recess, that should be allowed...but in the classroom or when addressing teachers, I agree that English is best...so please don't generalize about liberals (or anyone else for that matter) we're not clones. k

Bob, unless you have inside information that I don't have, I really don't understand the speculation.

After much looking, I've only found one article which addresses the school board's response. I would like to know if the board's claimed reasons for firing Lacey were anywhere in her file prior to this incident. I've not read any claims from the board that their complaints appeared in Lacey's file prior to the suspension, leading me to believe that the board created this statement after the fact to cover their butts. Here's what the board claims is the reason for the firing............."failure to fulfill her duties, incompetence or inefficiency, inability to maintain discipline, insubordination and failure to meet professional conduct standards".

Where these things in her file prior to suspension, or where they created after the fact? I would like to see her performance reviews.

Ellen, I don't have any inside information. I was just pointing out that every charge friedmush quoted could just be different ways of saying the same thing.
