I would like to see your performance reviews.

Slightly off-topic. People seem to be taking offense to the names of sports teams:

    Washington Redskins

    Ole Miss

    Ottawa Senators

I take offense to the "minutemen" as a sports team mascot. That is so insensitive to some men!

Ksucidlo, I didn't claim that you agreed with the policy, but instead pointed out that the policy of firing one for challenging Mexican speaking children to speak English in school would only be derived by a board full of Liberals. Many Liberals would disagree with the firing the principal for doing so, and virtually all Conservatives would also.

I consider myself a liberal, but I don't see anything wrong with expecting children to speak English in school. It is preparing them for the real world, and allowing them to communicate in their native tongue all the time is going to hold them back. The accommodation that should be made is when there is an emergency situation...many people get flustered in such circumstances and having someone who can understand and translate what they're upset about is a plus. I also think if they want to converse with their friends in their own language during lunch or recess, that should be allowed...but in the classroom or when addressing teachers, I agree that English is best...so please don't generalize about liberals (or anyone else for that matter) we're not clones. k

Here's another example where a Liberal policy of coddling is certain to leave children woefully unprepared for life. With Liberals it's always about intent, not performance.

Don't forget the Chicago Bares. I'm offended by naked football players. It's not surprising that the NFL referees cheat the Bares when they play the great Detroit Lions.

On the surface it seems outrageous. But somehow I can't help believing there is more to this story. So I Googled and found this information not included in the Washington Times article. "The formal notice of termination Lacey received from the board listed eight reasons for not renewing her contract. Those included failure to fulfill her duties, incompetence or inefficiency, inability to maintain discipline, insubordination and failure to meet professional conduct standards."

To Muskeg's point, I don't point to things that agenda-driven media or personalities like Rush Limbaugh or Rachel Maddow or their print brethren as reliable, objective information.

Because it's a personnel issue and the employer can't talk, we'll probably never know the real story, just the views of the disgruntled ex-employee.

Stop being a weasel. Post the link so everyone can read the article you reference. And don't call yourself a Republican anymore because nobody is buying that bs.

"Asked to give specific examples of such behavior, Flores-Smith declined."

Comparing the way of life and the need to speak english in the 19th and early part of the 20th century to the way of life and need to speak english today is absurd. Furthermore, I'm immediately suspect that the study could be agenda driven since it came out of a far left university like UW-Madison.

That's right. The Republican Party doesn't need thoughtful independent voters.

The tent gets smaller and smaller.
Obviously these researchers never rode the NYC subway or a taxi

Question - if people are learning English faster why does the NY DMV give written exams in multiple languages? Why are signs in English and Spanish? Why do we have "press 1 for English, press 2 for Spanish"?

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that the claim that previous generations of immigrants adopted English more quickly than those of today is an urban legend.
Its likely a good thing that Spanish students dont understand what their Texas teachers are saying. The altered right wing curriculum for teachers in Texas now includes Creationism as a viable theory of the Universe (something any amateur geologist can refute in 5 minutes)...and Jefferson Davis's Inaugural address speech.....and a larger emphasis on Christian Church Pioneers like John Calvin as opposed to our country's founding fathers - like Thomas Jefferson.

Spending 5 minutes in a Texas school would be enough to make me envious of Hellen Keller.
