DonDiego is ambidextrous; he reads political posts and trip reports.

Congratulations to Campion on his successful Las Vegas excursion.

So much for keeping your insurance if you like it.

Obama lies and people cry

Health plans are sending hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters to people who buy their own coverage, frustrating some consumers who want to keep what they have and forcing others to buy more costly policies.

The main reason insurers offer is that the policies fall short of what the Affordable Care Act requires starting Jan. 1. Most are ending policies sold after the law passed in March 2010. At least a few are canceling plans sold to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

But the cancellation notices, which began arriving in August, have shocked many consumers in light of President Barack Obama’s promise that people could keep their plans if they liked them.

Florida Blue, for example, is terminating about 300,000 policies, about 80 percent of its individual policies in the state. Kaiser Permanente in California has sent notices to 160,000 people – about half of its individual business in the state. Insurer Highmark in Pittsburgh is dropping about 20 percent of its individual market customers, while Independence Blue Cross, the major insurer in Philadelphia, is dropping about 45 percent.

And that is the most F'd up thing, and the biggest lie about this whole train wreck. People who already had excellent insurance and pay out the wazoo for it are SOL and forced to buy something else when they were perfectly happy(relatively) with what they had.

I see by the postings here that the Obama voters are starting to see the light. Obama as a used car salesman- that is about right. The reality of the stupidity named "Obamacare" has negated ALL of the lies and truth twisting previously done by Chilcoot and Forkush. When confronted with the reality of their words, they then want to talk about another time and someone else. Staying on topic , when the facts prove just how ignorant and wrong they were, is impossible for these two - they change the subject. Like the majority of voters, they have bought into the "change you can believe in" and, as a result, are now realizing the ignorance of their ways as their "fearless leader" continues his dismantling of the Constitution and America. I hope you two and the countless millions of like minded sheep are happy with your new Daddy.

For the record I disliked it from the moment it was released. I saw it as what it was the Heritage Foundation's healthcare plan that Republican's had been peddling for years. Just because Obama adopted it and made it his plan doesn't suddenly make it good.

Those old plans are being discontinued because the Insurance companies are greedy. They see these old plans with their 80/20 coinsurance and these $500 - $1k deductibles and they realize if they can push folks into their Obamacare plans they will make more money with the 60/40 and the 70/30 coinsurance and higher deductibles.

Those of you with employer provided insurance will see the same thing as those polices come up for renewal in the next couple of years. Only in that case there is twice the enticement to screw you because both the insurance company and your employer will make more money if they move you into that type of plan. If anybody complains they can blame Obama and say their hands are tied.

That is completely false. The law requires insurance companies rebate their customers any profit beyond 20% above what is spent on care. That is distinctly different from the system that preceded it. Nobody would love to dissolve the insurance companies more than me.... But at least in the new law they are required to put patients in front of profits...and not be able to discriminate against sick people or women. Insurance companies gained with millions of more customers...but they are no longer allowed to engage in the unethical practices that defined them for decades.

Does that make Obamacare perfect? No. But just on those metrics alone its a massive step forward from what we had.
My understanding the average insurance industry margin was below 20% before Obamacare so most of them will be enjoying a raise.
I believe the law states that 80% of the money they collect from premiums must be spent on direct care...or a rebate to the customers. The remaining 20% is for the cost of running the business + profit.
" I believe the law states that 80% of the money they collect from premiums must be spent on direct care...or a rebate to the customers. The remaining 20% is for the cost of running the business + profit." ----------- To wit- As time goes on, PJ, I am sure the actual costs and profits of Obamacare will become readily evident.
speaking of 80% direct care requirement....don't you think it is very easy to make (manipulate) those amounts

just like thousands of non-profits (401c-3) charities can pay their admistration any amount of compensation, just as long as a fraction of contributions go for stated purpose
