What happened to this bulletin board?

A lot of folks don't have the money to go to Vegas anymore. Makes it difficult to post a trip report. "The new normal" Cynicism has replaced optimism I'm afraid.

Also all the states that have now allowed casinos are taking a lot of business away from Vegas.

Correct. I've taken a few trips to AC the last few years but it's a different thing. I'm already near the beach anyway.
Some of the biggest things are that some members would bitch if a topic belong under a different heading---way too many people jacking others around with small insulting posts---Anthony needs to at least post few things each week other than when he becomes upset with someone posts or remarks and strikes out...there are some topics that really do not get enough play to warrant the space on the board-----there are a lot of sites out there that offer Las Vegas information but I always have enjoyed the LVA site. It seemed like there were a lot of good posts with good information and tips telling both the good and the bad...Some of the best trip reports that will stand up to any site----maybe it the times we are living in but the site has made a 95% turn for the worst in the past three years.....
I don't agree that message boards are largely obsolete.
I think there will always be a place for them.

Yes...I spend tons of time reading all the Vegas related Facebook pages.
But I find if you pose a question one day, and don't get back to see the responses for a day or two, it has scrolled off into oblivion. I like the way boards have different sections, so if I asked a question about restaurants, I can easily locate the thread and its answers in the Dining section. etc.
Try that on Facebook.

Also, as Marlo pointed out, there is a real sense of community on some boards, that you don't find on Yelp or Trip Advisor. I value the opinion of someone I have been talking to online for ten years more than a total stranger.

Also I have met so many wonderful people through Vegas message board communities!
The daily friendly exchange makes you comfortable with meeting other board members in real life.

Long live message boards!

Hmm, looks like I missed out on some lively discussions since most of usernames mentioned I don't recognize. I agree with those who said that that the name-calling, political pissing contests, and hater-thons seem to be an integral part of the LVA FFA forum even if it's more extreme now. The first thread I noticed when I began to read the message boards seriously was about one of Bagiant's more colorful sexcapades, and the extremely heated and often virulent exchanges that followed it went on for pages before the moderator finally locked the thread. As a new member, that long-running thread made me wonder what I was getting into.

That said, I enjoy reading the LVA message boards because the folks here have a lot to offer as far as their personal views. Yes, I could read Yelp for reviews, but those are reviews written by a bunch of anonymous strangers whose opinions may or may not be bogus to begin with. Here, I feel like I sort of know the posters with their variegated personalities so it's almost like listening to family and friends when they talk about their gambling stories. And the occasional sexcapade and political rant just makes the posters more human.

I know what you mean Marlo, kinda feel the same way. This is the only forum I belong to that I actively participate in. It's sorta like a crazy, dysfunctional net family.
Oh and I'll add another thing. On places like yelp, tripadvisor and such, I took almost all bad reviews with a grain of salt, I figure that most people will only post when there's something to bitch about and conversely very few people will take the time to say something good if it was good. In other words, they'll only post when there's something to bitch about.

On here ,if westie said a place was bad, I would avoid it like the plague. If marcisdave or albeadle said some place was bad, I'd likely ignore it, all they do is bitch.
While I can understand the frustration with the LVA forum it really is a nice place to discuss and get info on Vegas. And compared to other forums on the internet it is the epitome of decorum and good will.

I frequent one other forum called Sailing Anarchy. It is the most popular site dedicated to sailing. The forum is populated by mostly racing sailors from all over the world and the information that can be gleaned there is of the highest quality. However, it makes this place seem completely on topic and as polite as the world gets. All new posters are greeted with "STFU newbie and post naked pictures of your wife/girlfriend." The shitfights that rage on some of the topics make the worst here seem cordial. it certainly hasn't hurt the sailing Anarchy site any, they have tens of thousands of members and hundreds of daily "prolific" posters.

A person reading this, or any internet forum must separate the chaff from the grain on their own.

Some other names that I have often wondered where have they been;

I'm still around, just that I don't post here anymore. I also don't like the political tone of this board. I tried to get something to change, I got into an argument with someone else and I used profanity, hoping that AC and the mods would finally put a stop to the political nonsense but that never happened, instead jumping on me for using profanity but allowing political threads to continue. At that time I decided that this board wasn't worth my time, I wasn't going to get sucked into any of the political nonsense anymore. I also realized that some posters actually make their comments because they want to get a "rise" from others and to suck those people into their discussion/confrontations. I apologize for using profanity but I was getting tired of the political and obnoxious posters/threads and hoped that the mods and AC would put a stop to that and allow the board to be more civilized and "vegas" related but that never happened.

I now post regularly on VMB since they don't tolerate political threads and uncivil tones. I do notice that some others are also moving over to that board. I know that some here think that the board will be dead without the political threads (true for this board) but VMB is flourishing very well without the political undertones. Yes, sometimes I feel "constrained" on VMB because they even moderate posts that have uncivil undertones but I would rather have a civil board than one that allows political threads to overtake the true nature of the board. Many of the regular posters here wouldn't last on VMB because their political opinions or even controversial or snide comments wouldn't be allowed on VMB.

I still come here regularly, but only to look at the Delete thread. Thanks blade for your continuous additions on the Delete thread, if it wasn't for that thread I would never come back to this board. I read and replied on this thread because I wanted to explain my actions (profanity) and also explain why so many have left this board. A number have been banned but many (such as myself) left because this board has become less of a vegas free for all and more of a political/controversial whiners board.

That is JMHO and I'm sure that I and others who left aren't really missed here.

- Noahcat--comes to Vegas periodically with the AC group. Married.
- Sue Casey--posts occasionally on the paid side.
- Nesalk--posts occasionally (I love his irreverence, others didn't get it)
- makikiboy--posted recently, I think??
- HockeyDad--is he the same as Hockeystl? Haven't heard from Hockeystl. I used to send him SWA drink coupons.
- LloydtheLover--I thought he posted recently??

Some other dropouts:
- JFReller--A VP guru, his posts were so entertaining.
- HChuckles--miss her. She got busy with life.
- TennisBum--Nice guy. My husband enjoyed a day at the shooting range with him.
- Ken2V--mostly into the golf scene, posts occasionally on free side. Enjoyed his erudite perspective (in a good way).
- MarcR--tired of the contenious replies and same ole same ole, signed off.
- Marco??--can't remember his exact handle, great contributor, caught an insult from Anthony (bad timing) and signed off.
- ??cute doggy avatar--great contributor, forget his name at the moment, needed a break from the gambling scene.
- Grapelime--not really missed by anyone, had several re-incarnations, kept things stirred up and not in a good way.

Agreed.
Anyone wants to ask questions I will respond.
But the country is so divided that 10 years ago.....Started with Bushie and continued with YObama......Fox news and MSNBC just fan the flames of opinions.

lets get back to Vegas and the city.
