Minneapolis to disband police department

What's the big uproar ?

From CNN :

Disbanding police altogether falls on the more radical end of the police divestment spectrum, but it's gaining traction.
MPD150, a community advocacy organization in Minneapolis, focuses on abolishing local police. Its work has been spotlighted since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis Police custody.
"The people who respond to crises in our community should be the people who are best-equipped to deal with those crises," the organization says.
Rather than "strangers armed with guns," the organization says, first responders should be mental health providers, social workers, victim advocates and other community members in less visible roles.
It argues law and order isn't abetted by law enforcement, but through education, jobs and mental health services that low-income communities are often denied. MPD150 and other police abolition organizations want wider access to all three.

One of the advantages of living in the United States is the variety of governance found within the fifty states and thousands of municipalities.  This allows experimentation among the States and Cities, the subsequent analyses of which can be employed to improve governance.

DonDiego looks forward to an experiment in which a city with a population approaching half-a-million citizens abolishes its police department.  Perhaps once the burden imposed upon the population by the police is replaced by the benefits of enforcement of the law by social workers and victim advocates Minneapolis will, indeed, become a paradise.

Or, perhaps another outcome is more likely.

[Poor old DonDiego and teecher visited the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolis several years ago in their now-completed quest to attend a home-field game in each NFL stadium.  He was particularly impressed by the Light-Rail transportation encompassing St. Paul and Minneapolis. - from one downtown to another downtown to the Mall of America and to the airport.]

There are no details as of yet as to what the Minni-St Paul plan will look like.    But they are not the first to do it.   Camden, NJ disolved their police in 2013.   SOmehow they did not implode.  In fact, they improved remarkably.

How Camden NJ remade its police force

Homicides have gone down from 67 in 2012 to 25 in 2019. Excessive-force complaints went from 65 in 2012 to three last year, Thomson said.

The changes are far from the radical defunding proposed by activists today. But Thomson echoed many of their points.

Camden has police.  They simply moved from a city police department to a county wide police department which is available to any municipality who wishes to use it.  Most Minneapolis city council members are calling for the full elimination of any poice department.  Most Camden police officers simply moved from the old department to the new department.

I look forward to learning the results in Minneapolis.  Chuckle chuckle.

I've learned more about this wonderful Camden County, NJ police department.  The only city that uses the county run police deparment is Camden.  The police force was supposed to shrink and save money, but it instead has doubled in size of personel, and costs have exploded.

More money and more cops is exactly the opposite of what was promised.  I'm not surprised that crime has gone down with twice the cops.  Are you?

It should further be noted that the police department, which is twice as large as the old police department, is handling 3.5% fewer Camden, NJ citizens (since 2013).  People are leaving utopia.

Funny how the new trump republicans are always looking for America to fail....

Like what, exactly?

God you are stupid - to make it easy for you - -------------------------------------------------------------"According to CBS News, Minneapolis is the 19th most violent city in America.

Interestingly all 25 cities on the list are run by Democrats. "

And just look at how the trump republicans want America to fail....
