A Vegas related post for once: The mayor is seriously wacked.

The Trumper-fool states have ridiculously stringent UI requirements, such as that you have to have been working at the same job full-time for at least two years. The kicker is that you don't get the federal aid (that additional $600 a week) unless your state says you qualify. So in Trumper states, only about 1 in 4 unemployed people can actually get any UI relief.

This situation, of course, was deliberately created by conservatives, following the ideological stance that anyone who needs government benefits is a lazy bum. People are finding out, in this and many other ways (like health care), what a horrible thing it is to live in a conservative state.

My HVAC friend hasn't been working at his company in Indiana for two years, but he's getting both unemployment and the federal aid.  You really need more reliable reading material.

Florida releases unemployment data: 1.5 million claims filed but just 40,193 paid

Indiana might have more generous qualification rules than some other Trumper states. That doesn't change the fact that in Trumper states overall, 3 of 4 people who have lost their jobs don't qualify for UI--even if they've been paying into the system.

Also, Boilerboob, I didn't say that Indiana, or any other specific state, had that requirement. I gave it as an example of a Trumper state rule that keeps most people who have lost their jobs from getting UI benefits.

And BTW, I hope you're chewing out your friend for getting free shit.

Yes, they just started receiving those $600 Federal benefits this week when they should have been receiving them for weeks.

As to the fast burn, I thought the idea had some appeal at first, but then I read the science. It wouldn't work with this virus because the immunity granted by having caught the virus is only temporary. We also didn't have the hospital beds to handle the patients nor did we have a system in place to make sure the high risk population could stay isolated and fed while in isolation.

Regarding getting the virus twice.

Where did Kevin get his 3 out 4 number?

I know the Nevada site is sporadic & the NYS site just went up & I still haven't been approved.

Those are Democratic states.

Mark, I'm obviously talking about an Indiana friend, yet you bring up Florida.  Would mister please tell us in advance, what other contingencies government should be prepared for, or are you just going to continue complaining after the fact?  Indiana unemployment claims increased 5200%.  You really expected them to be ready to handle this seemlessly?

Every state is overwhelmed. That's not the issue. It's that many Trumper states are continuing to impose their ideological requirements on their UI applicants, thus effectively blocking the federal UI additions.

All the Democratic states that I checked have waived their state-specific qualification criteria for the duration. But in Trumper states, UI is too ideologically charged. Thus, many of their residents are SOL.

It was an absolute certainty that you'd trot out that stupid, tired phrase yet again.

Please tell me how anyone could have prepared for this. Chance of getting sick, chance of dying, global economic depression, loss of one's job. Maybe you'll say that everyone should have built up a huge emergency stash. But not everyone can do that.

I think you are truly ignorant of the extent to which many people struggle just to survive. That's the only way to explain your utter lack of compassion and empathy.
