This is all just part of a bigger assault on our freedom by the enviro-nuts. First it was unleaded gas. Then it was energy saving light bulbs. And now cloth grocery bags ! Doesn't it just piss you off?

Don't forget the 55 mph speed limit.
It's gonna happen in Austin too.

The law goes in to effect in 2013.

When it happens I will be forced to buy bags to throw out cat litter. Hooray, a new expense...

Get this!! If you are on welfare and recieving food stamps you are exempt from the 10 cent a bag charge. Stick to the honest guy!!! California sucks!

People on food stamps are dishonest?

I think I am going to start using the reusable bags anyway. I feel like I am destroying the planet every time I go into Whole Foods and am the only person there that uses one of their bags (they only have paper, btw)

What are you talking about?

The City of Los Angeles instituted a ban, to be phased in over a year.

This has nothing to do with with California state budget.

Nor will this generate government revenue. If anything, it'll save the government money by reducing trash and landfill use.

The ban came after years of campaigning by clean-water advocates who said it would reduce the amount of trash in landfills, the region's waterways and the ocean. They estimate Californians use 12 billion plastic bags a year and that less than 5% of the state's plastic bags are recycled.

LA Times, today

If I lived in LA or one of the many other California cities with similar bans, I would be glad to know that I wasn't subsidizing other shoppers' inability to remember to bring a reusable bag to the store.

I tend to agree with the enviromentalists here, those fricken' plastic bags seem to be everywhere.

Well you won't be agreeing when they ban the sale of the heavy-duty, extra-thick plastic you use for your Food Saver machine.

Au contrair', I wash and reuse my nags. I've got the same 3 boxes I got with it and still have a several I haven't used yet.

Welcome to the Nanny State --- too bad the Nanny does not wear fishnets
What's next? Designated times to use the bathroom? Legislation on how much toilet paper you can use? As I stated earlier, LA freeways and infrastructure are a mess, and they choose to make this a priority. What a joke.
Kroger, has been collecting plastic bags for a number of years now.

FWIW, Wash your cloth bags after each use and you won't get any contamination from the bag onto the meat. However, you need to get meats into a nice cold fridge/freezer w/in 60 minutes of purchase or you can have some of those nasty microbes doing the horizontal bop and being quite the happy little critters.

IMHO, bring back paper bags! Easy to recycle, get more in a bag, and will piss off all of those green folks.
