The Government Has Shut Down [01OCT2013]

oooo...that was fun.

Readers here are familiar enough with Don Diego to come to their own conclusion regarding his affinity for hyperbolic metaphors.

There is no open question regarding the leader of the government shutdown, Ted Cruz, and his love for such things. On the eve of the government shutdown he compared people who embraced Obamacare to Nazi appeasers in the rise of the Third Reich. I wonder if that's someone Don Diego believes is serious about negotiating.

As to Don Diego's opinion about delaying the mandate in the ACA...there's nothing wrong with having different opinions and wanting to negotiate. Most Democrats would love to negotiate an entire host of issues with Republicans: Immigration Reform, gun laws, a new voting rights act...just to name a few.

But here's the thing: I don't know of any Washington Democrats, their pundits, or anyone in their base that would think its an acceptable tactic to shutdown the US Federal Government as means to force the other side's hand in such negotiations. And that's really the difference. And the idea that Republicans think they are doing Democrats and the country a big favor by choosing select parts of the government to fund in the middle of their little game isn't fooling anyone .

According to forky the only person allowed to change the obamacare law is obama, which he has done many times, without the consent of congress. When the Republicans do it, it is hostage taking or ransoming.

The democrats in the senate along with obama are the ones keeping the govt in slim down mode, as they have rejected the Republican compromise of having Congress give up their obamacare exemption and to let individuals have the same extension that Obama gave business.

DonDiego is pleased to have introduced pjstroh to yet another pleasure of the internets.

DonDiego knows of Democrats who are keeping the National Parks and Monuments closed to WWII veterans, . . . keeping kids with cancer from getting treatment, . . . and not allowing Reservists and National Guardsmen from training. And that's no fooling!

Oh, . . . so far as DonDiego knows the Sun rose on ORNE Day 6; it is heavily overcast here in Secaucus. He will soon test the toilet up here on his 14th floor quarters; if the coffee he has ingested does its duty.
Vacationing in Secaucus! Are you taking also taking a tour of Newark?

And we've come full circle.

Earlier on this thread I asked Don Diego if we should fund the whole government or if he believed some people affected were more important than others. He thought that was a loaded question and refused to answer ... but Don Diego now says Democrats are to blame for not answering that same loaded question in Washington.

But anyway...whats the big policy debate Democrats are using to demand we get monument workers back on the job? Let me know...better yet, let all the American people know. polls don't seem to be showing the people pointing the finger of blame at the right group according to Don Diego

You apparently missed the appropriate episode of Schoolhouse Rock. If you want to make or change law, you must do this:

Pass a bill in the Senate and the House, and have the President sign it.

And if people in Congress or the White House are preventing your bill from becoming law, you must do this:

Win elections.

There, I hope I've cleared that up!
Apparently forky didn't see all of Schoolhouse Rock because when the house passes a bill and the senate passes a different version; it should go to conference
I think he was referring to your point about Obamacare. That is if Republicans want to change or repeal Obamacare they need to come up with the votes to do so not take the economy hostage instead.

As to your point about negotiating the budget I think the Democrats wanted to go to conference for months but the crying man refused. It was only after he and his compatriots took the economy hostage did he want to negotiate.

The Senate is holding everything up.

The House bill calls for Congress to operate under the same obamacare rules as the rest of the country. It also calls for the individual mandate to get the same 1 year delay that obama gave to business.

The Senate has declined this compromise; I am not even sure they took it up for a vote.

As far as the budget, the House requested for the Senate to meet some pre-conference conditions (not an unusual request). The Senate refused.
