Nevada Governor signs $1.3 billion tax break package for electric car maker Tesla

Most people are worried about the following with an electric car:

1. Range. It probably isn't a car you can travel on vacation with, so you will probably need a car that takes gas.
2. Time to recharge (not just like filling the tank up) 90 seconds at a station
3. Electric usage at house and bill.much cheaper per mile than gasoline
4. Cost at recharging stationsfree
5. Lack of recharging stationscovered from my house to anywhere west of Salt Lake City accept the stretch from Vegas to Salt lake
6. Limited batter life and price to replace such battery
you get a warranted battery each time you receive a 90 second charge (actually a complete battery replacement)

Definition: boycott (transitive verb) to withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest or coercion.

To DonDiego's knowledge he has never boycotted anyone or anything. He is unlikely to start now. Besides, he has no beef against Tesla or Nevada in regard to their commercial/financial relationship.

In fact, DonDiego has participated in an organized protest only once so far as he recalls. During his sophomore year one night a mob of students marched to the University President's home after a tuition increase had been announced. The President came out, stood on his doorstep, and explained that it was necessary. The mob proceeded to march on the women's dormitory, and the protest ended in a panty raid. As panty raids go even that was pretty lame; the school was not noted for particularly attractive co-eds and some of them just began tossing their undergarments out the window to the roiling mob below. For hygienic reasons DonDiego did not secure any of the garments.

Anyway, DonDiego resides approximately 2000 miles from Nevada. He has visited Las Vegas once in the last 5 years; for all practical purposes he is already "withdrawn from commercial relations" within the State.
Here's a portion of a Forbes article explaining how Tesla buyers enjoy $10,000 per vehicle in state an federal government giveaways. That's just the beginning of free stuff that Liberals love to give away to aid, so called, green companies. The law requires that other American auto companies purchase "emissions credits" from Tesla at a clip of $13,600 per car. Americans who don't buy Tesla cars are "on the hook" for $24,000 of the cost per unit. This massive number, of course, doesn't even count battery subsidies, new state tax subsidies, blah, blah, blah. There is no telling how much all the free stuff adds up to, but it's certain to be far north of $30,000 per car. Liberals love to tell us that Tesla makes money, and that's simply a bunch of bull shit.

Tesla makes cars that no one is willing to buy, unless others pay half of the tab. Here's a portion of the article, plus the link if you'd like to read the balance.

"Tesla didn’t generate a profit by selling sexy cars, but rather by selling sleazy emissions 'credits', mandated by the state of California’s electric vehicle requirements. The competition, like Honda, doesn’t have a mass market plug-in to meet the mandate and therefore must buy the credits from Tesla, the only company that does. The bill for last quarter was $68 million. Absent this shakedown of potential car buyers, Tesla would have lost $57 million, or $11,400 per car. As the company sold 5,000 cars in the quarter, though, $13,600 per car was paid by other manufacturers, who are going to pass at least some of that cost on to buyers of their products. Folks in the new car market are likely paying a bit more than simply the direct tax subsidy."

The whole point of subsidies is to prop up new technology until it becomes profitable on its own. Subsidies becomes "sleazy" IMO when they are given to companies that don't need them. Interesting to note how Boilerman defends special tax breaks given to companies like Exxon and then blasts the ones given to companies like Tesla. But I've already pointed that out 100X before so ....whatever. I'm sure all those high paid workers in NV are going to feel so ashamed.

On another note its interesting to see how almost every major auto manufacturer is either already producing electric vehciles or has some on the horizon....and other companies like GE are building out stations to recharge those vehicles. This is no longer science fiction - its happening. And All those hilarious jokes made by our resident conservatives about green energy cars suddenly don't seem so funny. No worries - they laughed at the Wright Brothers too. Amazing what happens when scientists and engineers (helped by the government) can show us what is possible vs uninformed ideologues.

PJ is quite mistaken, as Boiler has ALWAYS maintained that virtually all government subsidies are bad...........including Exxon subsidies. While maintaining this stance, I've pointed out that Exxon pays some $30 BILLION per year in taxes and BILLIONS more per year in government royalties.

PJ makes a big deal that Exxon gets $10 MILLION per year in subsidies, most of which are for green energy development. While I don't like subsidies, to make a big deal out of benefits which are clearly insignificant in comparison to the amount of taxes paid is either due to ignorance or insincerity.

Where are those stations PJ? I'm sure you have hundreds in the Indy metro area.....or not.

Until the infrastructure is built, the cars won't be mainstream and that means high prices.

i. For the record, DonDiego did not laugh at the Wright brothers.

ii. Oh, and the Wright brothers did not receive Government assistance. All the early aviation experiments were financed by the Wright Cycle Company of Dayton, Ohio.
Ref: National Park Service

iii. Their first flight was in December 1903. For several years they negotiated with European Governments and the US Government for funds to support test flights or to purchase an aircraft to be developed. No Government would provide funding until the brothers had sufficiently proven the capabilities of their machine.

Hon. R. M. Nevin, etc.

My dear Sir:

Referring to your letter of the 21st instant to the Honorable Secretary of War inviting attention to the experiments in mechanical flight conducted by Messrs. Wilbur and Orville Wright, which has been referred to the Board or Ordnance and Fortification for action, I have the honor to inform you that, as many requests have been made for financial assistance in the development of designs for flying machines, the Board has found it necessary to decline to make allotments for the experimental development of devices for mechanical flight, and has determined that, before suggestions with that object in view will be considered, the device must have been brought to the stage of practical operation without expense to the United States.

It appears from the letter of Messrs. Wilbur and Orville Wright that their machine has not been brought to the stage of practical operation, but as soon as it shall have been perfected, the Board would be pleased to receive further representations from them in regard to it.

Very respectfully,

G. L. Gillespie,
Major General, General Staff
President of the Board

The first US Government contract was issued in December 1907 for a completed aircraft meeting designated performance specifications. The test flights did not go well, . . . including one in which Orville Wright suffered broken bones and his passenger Lt Selfridge was killed. After 3 extensions to their contract the Wrights delivered the airplane a year late.

You're so right. And there weren't many airports in 1902. I'm glad our government and society put money behind technology instead of listening to people like you. We'll rinse and repeat for the next generation of transportation....but not without a lot of the same kicking and screaming from the same minded folks. Aint America great?

DonDiego was likely not around during the Wright Brothers era...but did he laugh or complain at state/local/federal governments that built airports?...or the Federal government that provided the FAA? Doesn't matter much.

Progress has a way of happening whether people laugh at it or not. But Progress happens faster when everyone embraces it

You quoted companies like GE making charging stations and I stated where are they? I have no issue with private companies investing in new technologies, although the feds tend to get in real late and THEN start calling it their own.
