Nevada Governor signs $1.3 billion tax break package for electric car maker Tesla

PJ, what technology innovation was developed during past airport construction?

Obama is realizing that his green energy plan can never compete, so he's finding ways to make the competition more expensive. Give money to the "takers", and take money from the "makers".

Until the infrastructure is built, the cars won't be mainstream and that means high prices.

You're so right. And there weren't many airports in 1902. I'm glad our government and society put money behind technology instead of listening to people like you. We'll rinse and repeat for the next generation of transportation....but not without a lot of the same kicking and screaming from the same minded folks. Aint America great?

When PJ understands the difference between a subsidy and a tax break, he might be able to have an intelligent discussion concerning business and government financial interactions. Allowing a business to keep money that they make is not the same thing as taking money from other businesses and/or individuals and giving it to another business. The government's track record, especially under this administration, of picking winners by providing direct cash flow to select businesses is full of failures. It looks like Tesla is getting both subsidies and tax breaks....just because their product fits a green agenda. Where is the typical liberal outrage about corporate welfare?

No, . . . and it doesn't matter much.

DonDiego suggests pjstroh overrates speed.

Witch trials happen faster when everyone embraces them.
Peace and Love happen faster when everyone embraces them.
National Socialism happens faster when everyone embraces it.
Civility happens faster when everyone embraces it.
Meaningless trivialities proliferate when everyone embraces them.

Haste makes waste. Speed does not equal quality. In fact, speed often results in reckless expenditures and low quality. Progress for some may be degeneration for others.

Sometimes the tortoise beats the hare.

Except in times of real emergency, DonDiego recommends contemplation precede expenditure of citizens' money by the Government.

Bob, you're right, I don't see the difference between a subsidy and a tax break - largely because their effect on the bottom line of both the government and recipient(s) is identical....which is why I normally laugh when people try to justify one and not the other.

Corporate Welfare? I don't have a problem with it when its targeted correctly. See my earlier post about investing in R&D vs companies with billion dollar profits.

I believe it was the proliferation and availability of civilian air travel.

Obama didn't give tax breaks to Tesla to build a plant in NV - that state's "small-government" Republican governor did. Boilerman believes he understands the future of automotive technology better than the CEO's of all the major manufacturers who are globally implementing Boilerman's referenced "UN-competeable" technology. Nuclear Fusion, . . . under development since the 1950s.

Ref: Popular Mechanics - Fusion Power for the World of Tomorrow - Here simply stated, is where we stand in harnessing the H-Bomb for peaceful uses. It may come sooner than you think.

Or not.

comparing electric car technology to airplanes and the role federal government plays/played in the development is ludicrous. Yes, the government built airports.... in conjunction with private companies. For electric cars the comparable infrastructure is already there. It's called "roads". Tesla has it's own charging stations and owners also use chargers in their own homes. Our local government put in free electric charging stations around town. They are rarely if ever used except by OC housewives who think its a better place to park even if they do not have an electric vehicle.

A well managed company with a viable product does not need subsidies. Tesla would do just fine without any government help. I'm sure they will take all they can get though. My companies received government subsidies for certain ores that were produced, we didn't need them but my competitors were getting them so I took them too. I never said it was right. Sure, it kept the price of copper down a few bucks but not enough to justify all the bureaucracy that it took. You as a taxpayer gave a dollar of your hard earned money so that you could save 9 cents on copper products.

The difference between a subsidy and a tax break is HUGE...MONUMENTAL. Saying that you do not see the difference makes me lose respect for your arguments.

Unless you're good at math...then not so much.

Crushing - but I'm a survivor. I'll do my best to get along without your respect.
Apparently I was incorrect when I thought that PJ called airport construction money spent to aid technology. Does this include or exclude the money spent for the new Indy airport?
