Black men who worked at country clubs, etc. were not slaves.
They were fine dining servers. They were paid. They supported their families.
Nope. Slaves.
From page 131 of the transcript, when Deen was asked what era she wanted to reenact:
Q: What era in America are you referring to?
Paula Deen: Well, I don't know. After the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War.
Q: Right. Back in an era where there were middle-aged black men waiting on white people.
Paula Deen: Well, it was not only black men, it was black women.
Q: Sure. And before the Civil War before the Civil War, those black men and women who were waiting on white people were slaves, right?
Paula Deen:Yes, I would say that they were slaves.
So before the Civil War they were slaves, during the Civil War they were slaves, and in the post-war deep South, they were free to be sharecroppers or servants, as long as they answered to "boy." And Deen though her guests might enjoy that kind of scene. The good old days.
