cigarette smoke in casinos

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the OP asked if anyone AGREED with the suggestion that smoking be banned in Vegas Casinos.

The very first response was ;

But then the pearlguy rant followed telling everyone to go the f*** somewhere else if they didn't like certain things about Vegas - apparently against banning anything in Vegas. I'll assume that includes smoking.

So, just wondering - which is it? For or against?

BTW: I don't smoke & would prefer not to be around smokers, but will happily sit near the considerate smokers on the casino floor and will simply walk away from the inconsiderate ones. I've also noticed that here in BC, just like Diane mentioned in Ontario, we don't allow smoking inside our casinos, restaurants, etc. either and it has not affected business at these places at all! If it was banned in Vegas it wouldn't break my heart.
As for the few non-smoking areas available in Vegas casinos, they always contain the WORST machines to play so I believe most nonsmokers go elsewhere on the floors to gamble. That means we pick our spots a bit more carefully and hope for smokers with manners in the areas we play in. Unfortunately, not everyone understands good manners.

Yeaaaa for Mistrhia !! Thank you !!!

As you have said...I "voted" that I was concerned about the worker's exposure. Pure and simple.
THEN DrMilled said smokers have NO rights ! Grrrr....

For the record, I stopped smoking 4 1/2 years ago. However, when people start saying smokers (or anyone for that matter) don't have "rights" because it doesn't fall in line with THEIR beliefs I get aggitated.

Everyday we see the stupidity of people trying to force their own issues under the guise of "what's good for the people (mankind)". It's about time those "do-gooders" took some RESPONSIBILITY for their OWN actions.
Going to Vegas, knowing full well there will be smoking nearly everywhere, then "bitching" about it shows about the same mentality as going to a whorehouse then "bitching" about it because YOU caught a disease. YOU made the CHOICE ! At least take the "responsibilty" for your OWN actions and stop trying to "convert" mankind because of YOUR stupidity.
I go to Vegas with the full knowledge that my wife and I will be exposed to smoke, kids, booze, probably over-eat, be in a hot tub where someone has "peed", will likely lose money gambling, etc. etc. etc. (* see partial list above). HOWEVER ... I take the responsibility for all of those possible bad outcomes and make the CHOICE to go anyway.
I like having the FREEDOM OF CHOICE to do what I do and I take FULL responsiblity if I make a bad decision. Wish others would do the same.
I don't play "russian roulette" because I'm pretty sure I won't be happy with the outcome if I hear momentarily hear a "bang". (Just MY choice !) But I will defend the "rights" of other to play IF they so wish.
And quite frankly, it's a great way to "cull the herd" for making stupid decisions.
Wish everyone would "man (or woman) up" and start taking responsibility for their own actions.
If you don't like something about Vegas (or any other subject), don't go or don't do it ! SIMPLE as THAT!

Time for the "world" to stop bitching and make a friggin' DECISION and take the RESPONSIBILITY for it. Just PLEASE...don't infringe on my FREEDOM of CHOICE to make mine !

For the record, I am in favor of "Stupid Police"... and I think they should be able to carry guns and use lethal force where necessary. Unfortunately, they probably can't stockpile enough bullets.
Just sayin' ....

P.S. Thanks again Mistrhia ... for "paying attention". It's refreshing to see someone who actually considers the facts before "chirping" !

Hope everyone here has a GREAT day talking about how "Fabulous" Vegas is .... just the way it is !
pearlguy- I am happy, for your sake, to read that you have quit smoking. I dare say you notice the difference in your health. Smokers can do what they want with their life, but they have no rights smoking when around others.
All interested persons can watch Revel AC in Atlantic City. It opened totally non-smoking.

Also note that they don't want anyone to know this until they get there. Go to https://www.revelresorts.com/ and put "smoking" in their search box. "0 items found for "smoking" - "Sorry there are no results for your search criteria."

So even the people who decided to try a major non-smoking casino don't want to advertise and market that it's non-smoking.

Dear Abbey
" I'm confused....PLEASE help! My Doctor (and a few of his friends) continues to come into a smokey casino that I frequent in Las Vegas. I know he is concerned about the perils of second hand smoke.
He does his best to convince everyone that the politicians or casino should ban smoking for all concerned. He has mentioned that he can go to a local casino where there is no smoking. I am concerned for his well being. (He shouldn't have subject himself to all the second hand smoke while in Las Vegas). However, he continues to go despite all of the dangers present. I'm worried that instead of making the smart decision to stay away he will continue to risk his own health until a no smoking ban is put in place (which could be many years away).
I know his belief on the subject is strong but I am worried that he has not thought through all of the repercussions. He seems somewhat oblivious to this fact.
Perhaps you, a wise sage, could make him understand that continuing to fight for what is right could cost him his own life. That would be so sad (though ironic !). Please help him to understand the error of his ways.
I know that you "can't fix stupid" but in the meantime (until the laws and rights are changed in regards to smoking) please advise him how illogical his decision to keep subjecting himself to all the smoke on behalf of the "good" smart people everywhere. I pray you can help him find a better way. Thank you."

A Concerned "Ex" Smoker !

P.S. On that note... the defense rests.
Smoking is a bit like zoning. Folks rant and rave about "property rights," but your property rights end where it has a deleterious effect on my property rights. Hence zoning. Hence smoking bans.
Except that nobody is forcing you to go into a place where smoking is allowed.

There is also a legal doctrine called "coming to the nuisance." If you buy land and move in next door to a rifle range, don't expect them to change their ways because you don't like the noise. This doctrine should apply to you knowingly and willingly walking into a smoky casino.
I remember the episode of Undercover Boss where the MGM president went undercover. He had one dealer who talked about the smoke. In the reveal interview he said that he would look further into the smoke situation and trying to make it easier on dealers. I can't believe that he isn't fully aware of the atmosphere and only said that because the conversation was probably going to be used in the show.

Yet a casino is a place of public accommodation, so the common weal does "intrude." Always has. My choice is not being forced to endure a public nuisance and a health risk, not in how I choose my recreation. Should "freedom" extend to smoking in college classrooms and hospitals and grocery stores, public busses, churches, airplanes?

This isn't a rights issue any more than the banning of DDT. It's a public health problem and a nuisance, and it is going away.

Hope I'm not mis-construing what you are saying.(?)

Hence some places are "zoned" for no smoking....seems fair ! Some casinos are zoned for smoking...also seems "fair" Doesn't say you're not allowed to "not smoke" ? Seems fair.

If you go to a place that allows smoking (and you don't) ... complaining doesn't seem fair. It does seem incredibly stupid however.

Fairness does not necessarily equate to "rights". Nor does stupidity equate to "rights". However, though not my preference, I will defend your "right" to be stupid.
